“Just like in the inaugural year, we’ve had an overwhelming response from publishers which means we’ll be able to host events with some brilliant local authors and diverse new talent this coming autumn.
“We’re aiming to have 50+ authors involved in the festival. This year it will begin on 16 October and we’re hoping that we can raise enough money to last a full five weeks to go all the way through to 20 November.
“£10k has already been raised on Kickstarter and we’re hoping we can get close to our crowdfunding target of £20k. Any further funds raised from the crowdfunding campaign will help go towards covering essential expenditure.”
Punchdrunk, the internationally-acclaimed company that pioneered the breakthrough of immersive theatre in the UK, announces the final extension of Viola’s Room, which will conclude its run at Punchdrunk’s Woolwich home on 23 December.
From 31 October to 2 November Viola’s Room will celebrate Halloween with a special 90s Nostalgia Weekend. At selected time slots, visitors will receive with their ticket a bespoke cocktail and exclusive access to The Prop Store bar where you’ll be able to make your own 90s themed friendship bracelet and enjoy some nostalgic board games with friends.
From 20 November through to the end of the run, Viola’s Roomwill undergo a festive transformation with the launch of Viola’s Room: A Christmas Tale. Featuring Christmas music alongside other seasonal twists, visitors will be able to experience a different version of Punchdrunk’s intimate, linear immersive tale.
Written by Booker Prize-shortlisted Daisy Johnson, Viola’s Room reimagines Barry Pain’s classic gothic mystery TheMoon-Slave for a new audience. It distils two decades of Punchdrunk’s immersive practice into an intimate, linear, audio-driven adventure that promises to suffuse the dreams of those who dare to follow the light.
The production is conceived, directed and designed by Artistic Director Felix Barrett, with co-direction by Associate Director Hector Harkness (One Night, Long Ago; The Third Day) and design by Casey Jay Andrews, who was part of the design team on The Burnt City. Working with Punchdrunk for the first time are Lighting Designer Simon Wilkinson (Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Vanishing Point’s Metamorphosis), and Sound Designer Gareth Fry (Complicité’s The Encounter; V&A’s David Bowie Is, Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser and Diva exhibitions).
Viola’s Room is based at Punchdrunk’s home at One Cartridge Place, Woolwich.

The SE London BookFest has announced some of the headline authors who will be appearing at the inaugural event this autumn. Authors taking part include BBC Radio 4 presenter Emma Barnett and her husband Jeremy Weil (pictured above) and Kenny Imafidon, author of ‘That Peckham Boy’.
BBC radio presenter Barnett and Weil began photographing their favourite South London spots last year, initially just as a way to document special places and moments for their young family.
When they got home they printed out the photos for their son, now six, to scribble and scrawl on, a fun activity to keep him occupied and teach him about the local neighbourhood while the couple were also on maternity leave with their baby daughter.
Not only did he love colouring in his favourite places, but this simple activity gradually led to an ingenious idea - which grew into what is now a colouring book series, called Colour Your Streets.
The set now has over 30 titles, all inspired by a hyper-local neighbourhood, including Peckham, Dulwich and Lewisham.
Kenny Imafidon will be interviewed about his memoir ‘That Peckham Boy’.
As well as being a successful author, Imafidon is also an entrepreneur and social commentator and has worked on projects across the world with global businesses such as Vodafone and with international charities and large philanthropic foundations such as the Wellcome Trust and UNICEF UK. He is a trustee of several charities, including BBC Children in Need.
Alongside Lord Michael Hastings CBE, he is also the co-founder of My Brother’s Keeper, a voluntary group that supports men (mainly serving long-term sentences) in 6 prisons across the UK. In 2022 he was featured in Forbes’ annual 30 under 30 list for Social Impact.
Local foodies Mike Davies (Frank’s Cafe, The Camberwell Arms) and The Flygerians are also taking part to help promote their debut cookbooks, which are both scheduled to come out later this year.
Sisters Jo and Jess Edun opened The Flygerians restaurant in 2022 at Peckham Palms, a black female-led space supporting start-up businesses.
They made it into Vogue in a round-up of ‘the best black-owned restaurants in London’ and have since attracted plenty of media attention and made several TV appearances.
Co-founder Mark McGinlay said,
“We’ve had a great response from national publishers which means we’ll be able to showcase some fantastic local talent and some exciting new writers in November.
“The festival is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to cover some of the operating costs. Funds raised on Kickstarter will help go towards covering essential expenditure.
“There are various rewards available in return including exclusive invitations to the festival launch party. And obviously, the more money we are able to raise the bigger and better the festival will be!”
Formed in 1969, the original street band fuses soulful sounds with a mission to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony.
The year was 1969… and these ‘kids’ had the nerve to carry the name WAR at a time when peace was the slogan in an anti-Vietnam United States.
Their instruments and voices became their weapons of choice and the songs their ammunition.
They spoke out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes and turf wars, embracing all people with hope and the spirit of brotherhood in a message that still stands
