How to actually disable Steam Input in Desktop Mode
Show full content

Steam Input settings window.

Saw enough people have issues with this so I decided I’d make a guide. Steam Input can be pretty rad. But controlling your desktop, can be kinda bad. Some of us play non-Steam games too. Follow my lead, and you’ll pull through.

What is this?

Steam Input is Valve’s controller remapping tool they use to get PC games working on a controller and Steam Deck. It’s pretty handy and can do powerful stuff. However, Steam Input can also be used to control your mouse and keyboard on the the desktop while Steam is running. In fact, it’s enabled by default. While useful for living room PCs and SteamOS handhelds, it can be annoying if you don’t need to use your controller to navigate the desktop. It can be especially annoying if you play controller games without adding them to Steam first and get double inputs.

How to fix it
  1. Have your controller connected.
  2. In Steam, go to Steam (in the top menu bar) -> Settings -> Controller -> Advanced Settings -> Desktop Layout -> Edit.
    1. Before you head there, feel free to disable Guide button focuses Steam if you want.
  3. Click Disable Steam Input on the top right.
  4. Close out of the controller settings and see if your controller no longer controls the desktop.

Note that doing this only disables Steam Input on Desktop on that controller type. So doing it on an Xbox controller works accross all controllers Steam sees as an Xbox controller but not a PS4 controller. You will have to repeat the steps per controller type you want to disable.

Here’s a tip: if you have multiple controllers connected, you can switch between configuring each one via the tabs at the top of the window.

gif of soilder tf2 in front of an american flag firing off guns. Text: What the fuck is a kilometer?

One night I was browsing through SteamGridDB and found some funny art. I then wondered if there was an account somewhere that highlights funny and/or cool art from there, as that seems like a thing that should exist. I searched for one but I found nothing. So that’s why this exists. Also let’s be practice with Postybirb, since I want to eventually also have this on Bluesky and Mastodon someday.

That’s it that’s the post. Go follow the account and maybe submit some art you want me to highlight.

Update April 2026
Show full content

So I just realized I can just post updates to here about anything, I don’t have to make it themed to a specific topic and I’ve got multiple things in the plan so I’m doing this from now on. Also I’m trying out Microsoft’s speech recognition thing to write some parts of this blog post so there’s that as well.

Homelab Update: New Apps FreshRSS

I’ve noticed that I waste a lot of time checking my YouTube subscriptions page for any new videos. So I set this up so that I get notified when my subs upload via RSS. The program on my server works, but the Firefox extension that I use to get the new video count doesn’t auto-check the server, so I still have to manually check. Clicking a button is faster, at least. Next up, getting an app for the phone and iPad, possibly.

RomM

This is fun. My own personal ROM repository, good looking too. Haven’t put all my ROMs up there because of my laptop server’s storage space, but I’ve got the main ones that aren’t PS2.

Switching to muOS

I’ve decided to switch the OS on my Anbernic RG40XX-H from Knulli to muOS. At first it was in hopes that it would have a more reliable internet connection so that my RetroAchievements can properly unlock. I don’t think that’s working so well, but I have noticed that games feel smoother for some reason. In fact, even PS1 games seem to run acceptable here where they chugged on Knulli (I only tested Crash Team Racing on here though).

I guess I’m also trying to reexamine what I want out of an emulation frontend UI? Do I really need videos when they take up so much space and i barely watch them? It is a shame muOS currently doesn’t support manuals though. I’d love to use Cocoon on an Android device but I currently don’t have one rn.

Also considering changing how I sync my emulator saves. I currently use Syncthing for that, but the various frontends all setup RetroArch to store saves differently, so I can’t actually use that without dealing with the config. I’m trying to move my saves to RomM and syncing that way, but I’m also considering dropping the sync aspect and only doing backups? I don’t really play my games on different devices. I don’t emulate on PC anymore, Steam Deck I only use for retro 3d systems, while rg40xxh has all the retro 2d games. The only save sync I’ve actually used is for Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers.

Played

Chrono Trigger [snes - rg40xxh] (update): Still going through this. Got past the prehistoric section and got back Frog.

Pokemon Champions [switch 2]: oh yeah, i forgot to mention this last time, actually. Seems fine for casual battling, but I think Pokemon battles just aren’t what I want from Pokemon. I’d probably enjoy Pokopia if I get that.

skate 3 [ps3]: fired this up after reinstalling skate. 2025 (henceforth referred to as skEAte) and playing that for a tiny bit. don’t remember why. hoping its story-based open-world structure would work better than skEAte’s free-to-play thing? got tired of skEAte’s tome and thought skate 3 would be more interesting to experience? either way i got annoyed at repeatedly bailing out and fell off.

eWorlds [steam deck]: this was interesting. i got it because it was doing a free giveaway. basic 3d platformer, not a very engaging moveset, but it’s multiplayer. In that you can see other players and their outfits, and do emotes. I don’t know if you can actually interact with them. this is the type of multiplayer I associate with roblox.

Grace [roblox - pc]: look i like going fast ok. serious explanation: it’s in the same genre as the popular Roblox game, Doors. You go down a hallway going through doors to get to the end, and along the way you have to deal with various horror mascots by doing various things. Grace takes that formula and instead of just walking down the hallway you you’re running, sliding, and wall-kicking. I like the speed and I like the music. Not as much a fan of the depiction of the robloxian in its artstyle.

End

My impression of using Microsoft’s speech to text thing, it’s exhausting to do and I have to prepare my sentences in advance so I mostly did not use it that much for writing this. As for these update posts, I’ll try and keep making them so that this blog remains active.

photo of a new 3ds xl showing a shiba inu nintendog.

So I haven’t been finishing many games recently, which is a problem for me considering I have a media thread I use to encourage me to post more. But I have started some videogames. And it would be nice to share my first impressions before I forget them. And I need a prompt to make me blog more.

Because of all that, I’ve realized that I don’t need to only post things i’ve finished. I can just post about stuff i’ve tried. So I’m doing this from now on. Format inspired by Aura.

house flipper [pc]

they gave it away for free because they’re remastering it. nice to play a job sim with varied tasks.

Sephonie [steam deck]

spun this up as a bed game because I know it has sleepy, ethereal vibes. it’s a 3d platformer! I like it! i wanna finish this.

nintendogs + cats: Golden Retriever & New Friends [new 3ds xl]

thought I needed a game I could quickly check in on throughout the day so that I spend less time on socials. Mainly wanted the cats but it looks like that would take a while. the header image shows my son bluey (i named on the spot and that was the best feeling dog name i could think of) he has no disease.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand [ps3]

Tried this out because of the Bullet Time podcast episode, but I was hoping this would be more arcadey than it is. It’s not really all that flashy in the hud and the shooting is nothing special.

Chrono Trigger [snes - rg40xxh]

The game, is fun.

- Reggie Fils-Aimé, E3 2017

Well, I did say at the beginning of the year that I wanted to play moore RPGs. I admire how efficient it is with its dialogue. And I’m surprised that it lets you move around while talking to people.

Shooty Shooty Robot Invasion [pc]

I was expecting this to be much shorter than it is. like, i didn’t know it had levels. Moved to Steam Deck.

I took some drawing lessons
Show full content

Over the last 2 months, I have been taking some drawing lessons over at the Valey Art Gallery because that sounded neat and I figured it would help me start making art. These are my results.

Snowman with a heart tag.

A fat bunny plush.

Carrot on it's side.

This carrot is actually a plush of a bunny that can zip itself up to be inside the carrot, which i did so that it would be easier to draw.

Duck on a dark background.

Candlestick thing.

Kirby.

My kirby plush. This one i'm most proud of. Not pictured: off to the side was me attempting to draw in part of some cloth draped over some stuff, since that was what we were supposed to focus on this lesson.

Not uploaded: Some cubes and boxes I drew as part of the perspective lesson.

Poseable mannequin.

For my final class I decided to challenge myself and draw the posing figure that I got as part of my art supplies. I think it turned out pretty well.

Overall, I’m pleased with what I did. I’ll probably switch to digital art though. Easier for me to just use the iPad than carry around a sketchbook.

I've set up a homelab
Show full content

So I have an old ass laptop I used to run Linux Mint on for a while. Barely used it after a while. All my computing I can do on my PC. So I decided to turn it into a homelab. Got it set up for a bit, but eventually fizzled out. Thank’s to this video, however, I’ve gotten the motivation to finally set it up properly.

https://youtu.be/AtgCcMjtqF0

The Setup

The laptop itself is an old LENOVO Thinkpad T450, i5-5300U CPU with 8G RAM, with about 900GB onboard space, Etherneted directly to the router. For the OS and home server setup, I went with Ubuntu Server running Runtipi, a thing that manages spinning up Docker containers. I originally tried to go with ZimaOS, but one of the apps I wanted didn’t work there.

I’ve decided to make the homelab Deltarune themed, and named the computer it was running on cybercity.

The Apps copyparty (File Server)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15_-hgsX2V0

Above: A really good demonstration video.

The reason I decided to turn the laptop into a server in the first place; so that I could turn it into a sort of NAS for backups. Right now it’s just something that’s faster than using FTP.

Jellyfin (Media)

Mainly wanted to host my Bandcamp purchases and downloaded music so that I don’t have to pay iBroadcast for high bitrate, along with some videos for fun. Ended up also ripping some thrifted DVDs and putting it on there too. Although, since I don’t really listen to music on my phone, I have not been using that for playing music that much. I have foobar2000 on my PC, I just use that instead. When I’m not using Youtube.

Immich (Personal Photos)

This one I learned about from that video, and also the one that didn’t work on ZimaOS. With this I have merged my Google Photos and iCloud Photos data into one. That seems pretty handy.

Dashy (Dashboard)

Another reason I wanted a homelab. I just liked the look of this one, and the idea of a personal startpage with widgets felt nice. Haven’t used it much though.

Fireshare (Game Clips)

Another one I learnt from that video. Sounds fun, especially the part where multiple people upload.

Syncthing (File Sync)

This one I had trouble setting up at first. Currently, I’ve made it sync with my music folder on my PC, inspired by how Jeff set up something similar with Steam captures and Fireshare in the video. So now, whenever I add an album to my PC’s music library, it also gets added to the server, and thus, Jellyfin.

…and I have Portainer for Docker monitoring.

Things to set up in the future Remote access

Yeah, currently, I can’t actually get to anything outside my home network. I’ll have to either see if Tailscale will work, or set up a reverse proxy and finally buy some domains. I’ll probably want reverse proxies regardless because of my other ideas.

Minecraft server (and maybe more games)

This sounds like a great way to meet new people. I’d probably load up my server with movement mods. As for hosting servers for other games, my current bottleneck is a lack of RAM. I may need to hold off on that until I upgrade the server someday.

Let anyone send me files (copyparty) and game clips (Fireshare)

This sounds like fun, even with the risks involved. I’ll be careful with the links.

Fully setup Dashy

I haven’t really explored all customization options and plugins yet. I’d like to make it Castle Town themed.

Setup local domains

So that I don’t have to use IP addresses to get to the apps. This is also where the rest of my Deltarune theming comes in, as my plan was to name the subdomains after Deltarune places and characters.

End of 2025 Media Log
Show full content

For the start of this year, I made the decision to make my media log a part of my website, for reasons I wrote about on the media log main page. So I created a new subpage here, learnt how to use VSCode Snippets to make it easier, and started logging. And now, at the end of the year, it’s time for me to look through everything I’ve done, see what’s interesting, and close that log.

I’ll be looking through the 2025 media log as I’m writing this blog post, so these reactions are live. I’ll pick out highlights and only mention those here (along with the closing thoughts to look at the year holistically, I guess). And I’ll be doing it in chronological order, bottom to top.

Moss [oculus rift 2]

my first 2025 game I beat really was a VR game huh. Also, unfortunately, I no longer have a VR setup since my brother sold that PC, and I upgraded the graphics card on my computer[1], and it doesn’t have enough slots for me to keep the Rift plugged in (I use two monitors), so that headset has gone back in the box unused.

Also, I’ve only now noticed that what are supposed to be formatted as rich link preview cards via this plugin only show up as plain URLs. So that’s annoying. I decided to not link to my Backloggd reviews later on in the log since I already put the text in the log itself, but I don’t like how there’s just URLs in plaintext on some of these entries. I wish someone told me about this earlier, but that’s what happens when I only post to this website. Generally I would like people to respond to what I post (Please leave a comment!). Start of 2026, I’m setting it up so that when I update my website, I auto-generate a post about it on my socials.

Gravity Rush [psvita]

I guess I got a PSVita this year. Either that or I only beat Gravity Rush this year. Regardless, I don’t actually use the Vita that much. There’s not a lot of games exclusive there that I want to beat, and I only want to play Vita games on my Vita, in the same way I only want to play DS and 3DS games on my New 3DS XL and Playdate games on my Playdate. I’m not interested in using homebrewed consoles for emulation. I’d rather use a retro handheld like the Anbernic or a PC handheld like the Steam Deck. Also, that way I can hook them up to my SyncThing network and synchronize my saves across my devices.

tearaway [psvita]

Was that really this year? Anyway, best PSVita game I beat this year because it’s the best PSVita game of all time.

chibi-robo! [steam deck]

I thought I would play more GameCube games when RetroAchievements support for it dropped but due to issues I haven’t. At least this one is one of the best.

sonic unleashed - Unleashed Recompiled [pc/steam deck]

I thought I would get a bigger response for putting what’s basically a slightly better Sonic Unleashed as my Backloggd GOTY for 2025. Regardless, I picked this as the game of this year, not just because of what it is, but also for what it represents. We had a lot of advancements in recompilations, decompilations, and emulation this year. So I picked this recomp of an Xbox 360 game as representative of them all.

warioware: move it! [switch] and WarioWare: Get It Together! [switch]

Oh yeah, I played those on my hacked and banned switch 1. Now that we’ve got a switch 2, these should be the last games I ever play on that switch 1.

I think I should mention this now, but when I say “we,” i mean “me and my family.”

mars after midnight [playdate]

The one playdate game I beat this year. There just aren’t a lot of Playdate games I’m interested in that go for cheap enough for me to buy. At least I thought this one was good.

ENA [youtube] and Ena: Dream BBQ [pc]

Ah, the year I finally looked at what this was.

ape escape 2 [steam deck] and 3 [steam deck]

I completed the entire trilogy this year (I beat 1 a few years ago).

WarioWare: Twisted! [android - pizza boy a pro]

I bought an emulator for my phone. That’s definitely significant.

deltarune (replayed ch. 1 and 2, then 3 and 4 this year, with shadow crystals on all) [pc/steam deck]

I wanna make a blog post about the current state of deltarune sometime next month, like I did in chapter 2. Until then, I’ll just leave it at: these were magical to experience.

No More Heroes - sweet difficulty + all lovikov balls + real ending [wii]

I would then start up no more heroes 2 on the wii. I got stuck at the last boss and eventually just watched the ending on youtube.

Simpsons Comics Colossal Compendium: Volume 5 [library]

Putting this here because it’s my 100th book logged in goodreads.

Superman: Up in the Sky [library]

You know what? Best book I read in 2025.

motorstorm: apocalypse - rookie campaign [ps3] and Infamous (good ending) [ps3]

Oh, I got and CFWd a PS3 this year too. I haven’t used it too much since then, but I want to go back. Just have issues setting up the games.

undertale yellow (pacifist) [steam deck]

Still peak.

Fatum Betula (2 of the endings) [pc] and Paratopic [pc]

Tried to play more horror games this October, but that plan got thrown off when I got stuck on the catapults in resident evil 4. I have gotten past that section since then and I’ll wrap that up in the new year.

kirby air riders [switch 2]

We got a switch 2 this year too. Air Riders is easily the best game on it currently, better than mario kart world. Was going to try and beat all challenges, but my motivation depleted.

Kirby’s Dream Land [game boy - rg40xxh]

I got an emulation handheld this year, for my birthday. Unfortunately, I haven’t been using it too much. I should have gotten a clamshell, so that I can just slip it in my pocket without worrying about damaging the analog sticks and having to put it in a case. If I ever get the chance to get another, I’ll go with that.

Blender Guru Donut Course for Blender 5.0 (series) [youtube]

Finally took the plunge to go through a tutorial, since I could follow along as it was being uploaded. I haven’t touched Blender since, but I’ll try sometime next year. There’s a lot of creative skills I want to learn.

fallen london - obtained final renown item (rubbery men) - obtained all renown items [web]

So this entry is actually wrong. I don’t have the final urchins renown item. I just forgot about that when I was entering that in.

Speaking of mistakes, I’d appreciate it if you could point out any typos and mistakes I have on here. Hopefully by putting my website updates on social media I get more feedback, I guess.

Some Webcomics

I also got an iPad Pro this year, hoping to use it for PDF eBooks and YouTube. I haven’t done much with it, but I am using it for webcomics now, at least.

Warframe: The New War [steam deck/pc]

I did not mention this on my log, but I then went on to complete all quests up to the current update. I originally got burnt out because their requirement for this was used to be too much. They removed that requirement, and so I could play it. I guess I’m gonna use this as my podcast game again.

And that’s that

Alright year, I think. As for what I want for 2026:

  • I’ll play more RPGs and long games this year. I started having commitment issues over how long they are, but I know I enjoy them when I play them.
  • Generally, I want to just start games more and worry less about finishing them. I got it in my head that I needed to beat games so that I don’t become the guy that emulates the first 5 minutes of every game from an old Hard Drive satire article. But I shouldn’t worry about that.
  • I want to start learning things I want to learn, such as game dev and art, and I should start doing courses and actually just make things.
  • I could blog more, now that I’ve set up a CMS to make posting easier.
  • I’d also like a job, I guess.
Some of the games I played but didn’t beat this year

This doesn’t mean that I’ll go back and finish them.

  • LittleBigPlanet [PSVita]
  • Super Metroid
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3
  • Yume Nikki
  • No More Heroes 2
  • Red Steel 2
  • The World Ends with You
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong
  • Rayman 2: The Great Escape
  • Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
  • Half-Life
  • Treachery in Beatdown City

See you all in 2026!

  1. I only did it because I thought the current one was broken. It wasn’t, it was the power button. And we only figured that out after upgrading the power supply, motherboard, and CPU as well. ↩︎

Just Unfollow
Show full content

Trying out shorter blog posts, and getting this out of the way before I do an end of year wrap up post.

Back when I was on Twitter, I once found a tool to trim the people you follow. The deal was that you would see an account you followed (profile and tweets) and decided if you actually wanted to keep following it or cut ties, based on if it “sparks joy” (it was themed around Marie Kondo back when that Netflix show was popular). I try to keep something like that in mind when I’m scrolling socials.

Paying attention when I’m going through my timeline. Looking at each individual profile, considering the tweets in the context of the timeline. Thinking about all those bot and gimmick accounts that I glaze over without actually reading. Looking at everyone who posted too much about stuff that made me angry. Generally noticing that I do not actually like posts coming from an account. Doing these made me realize how many accounts I followed on social media I don’t actually read.

Basically what I’m saying is that you should unfollow more people and follow less. If you notice that you aren’t paying attention to their posts or they make you angry, stop following them. From whatever social media site you’re using, whether it’s a brand account, a person, or a bot. It gets their posts out of the way of posts you actually want to see. The effectiveness of that might be less if you’re not using a pure chronological timeline, but you should be using that anyway.

The point is to improve your time on social media. If you unfollow anyone whose posts you don’t want to see, you get to read more posts you do like. That should make your time on social media better, and also possibly reduce it since you are no longer wasting time scrolling by posts you’ll never read.

By the way…

The point of this post is just to unfollow accounts and trim your timeline. blocking and muting them are a different thing. You shouldn’t worry about them noticing that you unfollowed them, rational people don’t keep track of each individual account that unfollows them.

My UZDoom (formerly GZDoom) setup
Show full content

So UZDoom recently dropped. It’s the new replacement for what was GZDoom, born after the former lead dev split due to trying to put in LLM-generated code without the team noticing. It’s mostly the same as the previous version of GZDoom, save for some minor improvements and new defaults (no more texture filtering! that means sharp pixel art by default). I hopped on as soon as it dropped to try it out, and instead of just carrying over my settings, I decided to let the engine make a new config, with its new defaults, and copy my tweaks individually.

Since this gave me an opportunity to retweak my settings, and because I want to blog more, I’m taking the opportunity to talk about the mods I set up to always load be default. I don’t use this setup on every mod, but this is my Vanilla+ config for Doom and Doom Engine games and mods.

This is the part of the .ini file that makes the engine autoload WADs. This shows you my load order and what mods I’ve installed. And as you can see on the bottom, I’ve also got some game-specific mods to load as well. There are more mods I autoload for Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, but those are just game-specific versions of everything under [doom.Autoload]. You can also think of this as a sneak peek into how I organize my WADs.

Mod Menu

Easy enough to explain. Combines all mod options into one menu entry, which can also be accesses via hotkey. Keeps the options menu tidy.

Tilt++

I like Quake’s tilt om movement effect. This lets me have that in Doom. I turn off the sideways head on death option though. That’s just too much.

DamNums

Display damage monsters take. I think damage numbers look cool.

Target Spy

Lets me see the current health of monsters. I like knowing how much I’ve done and how much I need to do. Especially good on boss enemies.

LevelInfo

Adds the kills, items, and secrets count to the HUD, along with the level and game time. I can use the kills count to track how much of the level I completed.

HitMakers

Helps me know when I land a shot, and more importantly, makes Doom feel better to play.

Autoautosave

More convenient than having to manually remember to F6. Though I also do that. So I choose to think of this as a supplement to my manual saves, and something to save me in case I forget.

Damage Direction Overlay

I don’t like not knowing what shot me, so having this on helps me get out of danger and cleaning up enemies.

Graveyard

Puts a gravestone where you died. IDK I think it’s neat.

Fullscreen Statusbar

I find Doom’s big status bar iconic, but by default, it only appears when you shrink the viewport. And that means you get wasted brown space on the sides of the bar. With this, I get the statusbar and can see the bottom corners of my POV. I’ve even gotten the HUD small enough that I can still see Doomguy’s hands and guns. Maybe I should consider splitting the HUD in the options, though, so that I can see more of that art.

Nashgore NEXT and Universal Gibs

I like gore. I like it when enemies explode into gibs when they die. Like with the HitMarkers, it makes the game feel punchier. I’ve tried other gore mods. But none of them worked with Doom’s artstyle. Except for Nashgore. Which I paired with Universal Gibs for extra gibs.

CBLOOD Ultimate Edition

Changes blood effects to match the sprites. Cacodemon blood is blue, and Baron blood is green. Since it’s all done at runtime, it’s got universal compatibility with mods.

Kinsie’s Gameplay Mod Test Map

Adds test maps. I use these to test mod settings and check out gameplay mods. Although maybe I should just use giveall for the latter so that I can try them in a proper gameplay setting.

And that’s that

I do not play Doom mods that often, tbh. There’s just too many other games to play, and I’ve gotten away from playing games on my computer and turned towards the Steam Deck in my game room. But I like my setup. If you’ve got your own setup, suggestions, or whatever, I’d like to hear it.

A case for a Steam Deck screenshot sharing app
Show full content

First post in a while, I know. I’m testing out a VSCode extension called Frontmatter. It’s meant to be like having a CMS inside your code editor, which should make writing new blog posts much easier. I also happened to get an idea for something I could blog about. And so, this post exists.

So I wanted to post screenshots from my Steam Deck. Steam, of course, can take in-game pictures on computers and SteamOS. They’ve even got fairly useful video capture features. But it’s slightly harder to share them to social media from the handheld. Which made me wonder if there could be some sort of program made for Deck (or any of these PC handhelds) that could do just that. Something with a Switch album like UI that makes posting pictures and videos from the Steam Deck easy.

However, I remembered that Steam has a Media tab, so I decided to check that out first. It helps, but it’s not what I want. You can only share directly to Steam’s profile feed or Steam chats, which I’m not interested in because who the hell seriously uses Steam’s social features. What I had to do was to send the pictures to my phone’s Steam app, and post them from my phone. Which works, and I got to post the pictures to Bluesky and Mastodon, but isn’t as convenient as doing it all from the Deck.

This is also how you share stuff from the Switch 2, but it’s slightly better there since you can have it send to your phone automatically. Also, it’s easier to save pictures in the Switch app. The Steam app can only open the Android share dialog (I have a Samsung), and I couldn’t figure out how to save the pics from there without using a third-party file explorer. In fact, I couldn’t even find the native file explorer, so if I didn’t happen to have a third-party app, I might have been unable to just save the image for all I know, which is pretty annoying since in both apps, you can only directly share one image at a time unless you save images.

I tried using a browser, but I would have to set up Flatpak permissions to access the captures. I could also maybe install an app like PostyBirb on the Steam Deck, but that’s geared towards furry artists. More importantly, neither of these options have controller support, and having to find the pics by browsing the files isn’t ideal.

Basically this post is me making a case for a proper photo/video sharing app for the Deck/PC Handhelds/SteamOS. I want a program that lets me easily look through all my Steam captures (photos and video clips), in a Switch Album like UI, that can be navigated with a controller, and from which I can post the captures to Bluesky, Mastodon, and whatever other place I want to post, all without leaving the console.

While I was writing this Valve went and announced the Steam Machine. Since it’s all on SteamOS, everything I said about the Deck applies to the Machine as well.

One of the big innovations of the Switch was easily taking screenshots and video clips of games and sharing them to social media. During its heyday, new Switch game releases meant seeing tons of pictures and clips across your feed. Part of the fun of Breath of the Wild was seeing all the shenanigans everyone got up to and the situations they found themselves in. PlayStation and Xbox would eventually follow suit and implement their own sharing features so that games on their platforms would benifit, of course. It’s great marketing, having your players blast Twitter with Content™ of your game, after all. But it did mean that discussions of now releases were easier to follow, and you could actually see what the game looked and sounded like. And since everyone could easily post pics from their consoles, said discussion was much more common. It also made for a great way for less famous releases to get noticed.

Ever since Twitter became X and stated charging for its API access, however, the console manufactureres removed directly posting to social media. Not just X, even Facebook is no longer supported on the Switches. And you can feel the effect. New games are talked about less on social media compared to before. You’re much more likely to have this experience where a game gets really popular and hardly anyone you follow is talking about it. This also made it slightly harder for new games to get noticed.

Obviously you can still take pictures and clips of games. But it’s not as easy to share them. I don’t have the other current gen consoles, but I have used the Switch 2 app, as I mentioned earlier. It’s easier than taking out the SD card or using that local network thing they put into the Switch 1. But you still have to remember to open the app. I know the more casual gamers don’t bother posting their captures because they can’t do it from the console.

Hence, I’m issuing an app request for a photo sharing app for Steam Deck. It would improve discussion of games accross the internet. It would be more convenient for gamers. And it would help games get noticed.

Moving SiIvagunner Posting back to Tumblr

I’ve changed my mind and am resuming my No Context SiIvagunner Bangers blog on tumblr, which was unbanned this month. It’s much easier to fire off posts on a social media site than making a whole ass blog post, and that way I can me timley. Also because I can see more people interacting and it’s easier to get asks. I’ll still post roundup posts here, since this format works better for bigger posts. But I’ll be using tumblr for however long that exists, even if that might not be long.

Last non-themed roundup I didn’t do a good job of actually going through past rips I liked. So for this one I’m gonna rectify that so that future roundups can focus on new rips or themes.

Also, for this year’s April Fools, they ripped music from games within other media. Just go to the channel and check them out.

I’ll start off with a relatively recent rip and the rest will be unsorted.

SiIvagunner Banger Roundup: Circus Edition
Show full content

Last time I said I wanted to do a themed rip roundup. I think I need to get it out of the way now because they’re putting out good rips too fast for me to be reasonably on top. Alongside new rips I want to highlight I want to actually go through the older rips I liked and share those, since I didn’t properly do that last roundup. So I’m going to get this idea out first.

One of things you need to know about SiIvagunner is that as a running gag, most of the rips of Circus - Five Nights at Freddy’s aren’t actually of that. It’s basically their wildcard. A circus rip can be anything. they once had an event where they “ripped” nothing but circus, and since then they still pull out one sometimes. There’s now about a hundred circus rips on the channel now …which also means the mix names used to differentiate them are unhinged. Here’s just a few, selected for music quality.

I’e been aware of this for a while now. Main gimmick is about a meter that builds up as you deal damage, gives you critical hits as it fills, and resets when you take damage. So if you’re playing it right, you get very powerful but can lose it easily. Good feeling combat and Witch Time analog.

SiIvagunner Banger Roundup: The Rebirth/The Season Mine Inauguration
Show full content

Years ago, I ran a blog on cohost dedicated to highlighting what I felt were the best and highest quality SiIvagunner rips I found (and their comments), and took submissions in the hopes of finding more. After cohost shut down I moved it to tumblr and tried to continue it there, but the blog was randomly delted, and staff wouldn’t respond to me. That really demotivated me and I didn’t bring it back for a while.

Eventually I tried out other places, but I couldn’t easily embed Youtube videos into Bear.blog, and Blogger was a bit too annoying to use. And in both cases I couldn’t hide spoilers easily. But I’ve just realized something. Why couldn’t I just do it on my blog in a roundup format? Like how other bloggers are doing link roundups. That way, I wouldn’t have to make a new blog, I could easily do youtube embeds (I have an eleventy extension that lets me paste in a link to create embeds), spoiler hiding ( tag), and even quoting comments (using > in the markdown files), and I get to keep my blog active. For user submissions, I have comments and a Neospring that I just remembered I could link to here.

What is SiIvagunner?

since this is the first one of these I’m posting here, I should probably link the explainer video they have on the channel. watch this if you don’t know what siIvagunner is.

https://youtu.be/_NFate6AfzU

Welcome to SiIvaGunner!

Ground Rules

I’ll carry over the rules from the previous incarnations:

  1. I’ll link what I want, from particularly funny and notable rips videos along with good music, as long as i think more people should know about it.
  2. I’ll also sometimes link other “high quality rip” channels in a similar style, such as TimmyTurnersGrandDad and VvvvvaVvvvvvr, if I think those rips should be highlighted too.
  3. User submissions accepted! Send me an ask, comment, or @ me on social media with a link to a rip and I’ll add it to next roundup.
  4. i’ll add extra notes when i post a video when I want to highlight some details about the rip. mostly this means if the rip is part of an event, relevant content warnings, or any funny/notable comments on the video (since my original idea was a siivagunner comments account). since I’m doing roundups and not just live posting them on a tumblr-like, I’m dropping the part where I mention if the rip was newly uploaded to the channel.
  5. I’ll hide anything that would reveal the nature of the rip behind a tag, to prevent spoilers. note that any note can be hidden under the spoiler tag, as long as it’s a spoiler. for example, a rip uploaded on monkey day from donkey kong country would not be under the spoiler tag (since the monkey day note won’t spoil the rip contents because it’s about the source game) but a rip from a game not about monkeys that’s actually a super monkey ball rip would have that under the spoiler tag (since if you know the rip was uploaded on monkey day, that implies that the joke is related to monkeys in some way, potentially spoiling the rip).

thanks for reading, enjoy the rips!

The Rebirth

For this first roundup, I’ll do it in two parts. This first part will be for famous rips and good starting rips I reccommend, as an introduction for anyone on the blog who hasn’t seen those other places or is new to siIva, which is something I feel like I should do for the first one of these. I’m pleased to announce the launch of a new page on my website! Presenting: the Media Log. This will be where I record all the games I beat, the movies I watched, the books I read, and so on. Basically, I’ve finally moved my media thread away from blogging social media like cohost and tumblr to my own website, like I said I would. I don’t think I can figure out how to create a new RSS feed for that, so I’ll just mention new entries in the Updates RSS feed, so follow that to keep up with my media log, along with website updates and new Megacollection entries.

To commemorate this, I’ve got one last entry for my 2024 media thread:

In 2024, you played 58 games on retroachievements.org and unlocked 286 achievements, earning you 1121 hardcore points and 5 softcore points. You submitted new scores for 186 leaderboards. You spent 67 hours playing games across 11 systems. 28 hours and 53 minutes of that were playing GameCube games. You beat 4 games on hardcore. Your most played game was Mother 3 at 16 hours and 24 minutes. Your rarest achievement earned was Crazy Drift Challenge - Amateur from Crazy Taxi, which has only been earned in hardcore by 1.10% of players. You made 1 forum posts.

- copied from the email they sent me.

IT HAPPEND AGAIN

I should really have waited until the actual end of the year to post that wrap-up post.

Vividlope - Cerise [Steam Deck]

(the game crashed when I tried to view the rank explanation for the final stage…)

q*bert if it was a dreamcast game. it’s fun.

pretty appropriate that I beat a y2k styled game on the last day of a year.

It’s time for me to look back at everything I did over the year via my media threads, pick out some highlights, and also mention some other stuff that happend this year. I actually had two of them. If you want to check them out, I started it on cohost, but had to move it once cohost announced its shutdown. If you’re reading this in 2025, you might need to put that link into the Wayback Machine or find some third party cohost archive to view that. I then did the rest of the year over on tumblr (chronological order). I’m looking into starting 2025’s media thread here, on my website, but I’ll talk more about that later in this post.

Also, check my Backloggd for some of reviews of the games I played.

Once again, I created over 100 posts in the cohost tag, and 39 more on tumblr (which will make the announcement post there for this post the 40th). EDIT: I also beat one more thing after I made this post, logged here. EDIT AGAIN: It happend twice..

Steamboat Willie via the official upload from the Disney Animation Studio’s youtube account

The first thing I did this year. I had to, it was basically penciled in as 2024’s first meme. Did you know Tintin and Popeye stories are entering the public domain this year?

Mother 3

Finished that off after a break from it last year-ish. That was a highlight.

Star Fox Zero and 64 3D, Pikmin 3 and New Play Control 1

I was originally going to go for the rest of the games in both series, but:

  • I found Assault a bit slow, advancing text in the cutscenes skips over some dialogue so I missed some stuff, and you can’t set controls for both Landmaster and On-Foot modes independently, and Landmaster was awful to control with strafe on the left stick. Also, this was before I had a Gamecube controller adapter, so I found button placement confusing. Maybe I’ll boot it up some other time.
  • Since the caves in Pikmin 2 pause time, the days went on for too long.
Dr Robotnik’s Ring Racers

Best game I played this year that also came out this year.

Rez Infinite - Area X (in VR) and Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay via Oculus Rift S

Unfortunately my current graphics card only has one DisplayPort output, so I can’t use my Rift S unless I unplug one of my monitors by reaching out to the back of the PC, which is super annoying. No more VR for me unless I get a newer/standalone headset, I guess.

Cozy Grove

The biggest project I undertook this year. I liked the characters, but I got really tired of the grind.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

THIS one might be my game of the year, in the sense that it might be the best game I played this year.

Website Updates
  • Change how I handle my update log so that I can only show the 5 most recent entries on the homepage, and give it its own RSS feed.
  • Added EmuKit, where I organized all the things I knew about emulation.
  • Switched from using cbox to Chattable for the chat box on my homepage, which I can actually moderate and customize to match my web design
  • Upgraded my blog with webmentions support, time to read articles, style for quotes, custom embeds including using Youtube Lite, and a tag cloud. Also switched comments from Disqus to Commentbox.io, which seems more lightweight.
  • Switched guestbook providers from 123guestbook (which shut down) to Atabook.
  • Other things I can’t remember.
Various Fallen London Milestones

I’ve reached the point where there’s not much to do but grind for whatever I don’t have (which includes the final renown items for Rubbery, Docks, Urchins, and Tomb-Colonists factions), so I mostly just log in for events and new updates at the moment.

Started using Freetube

Once Youtube started cracking down on adblockers I switched to using this third-party client on PC and haven’t looked back. No ads, video is bigger by default, and SponsorBlock built in.

Super Mario Galaxy

Similarly to the above I was originally going to also beat Super Mario Galaxy 2, but I dropped that off because it was too much Galaxy. Maybe in the future.

Shadow the Hedgehog: Reloaded

RetroAchievements on Gamecube dropped so I used that as an excuse to boot this up. Didn’t go through too many Gamecube games after that but that’s more because I like to vary what consoles I beat games on. Happy Year of Shadow everybody, funny how I beat this before SEGA announced that.

Cohost

Already wrote my thoughts here. Of course, I’ve cooled a lot on said thoughts since then.

SiIvagunner Bangers

I started a blog on cohost to highlight cool SiIvagunner rips, evolved out of a “No Context SiIvagunner Comments” concept. I had some fun sharing cool rips and funny comments, and finding other good rips that people submitted. I even held my own mini-event for the cohost shutdown where I posted rips based on endings, and did some roleplay as some characters.

Then I moved it to Tumblr and continued it there for a bit. But one day, the blog was deleted. I don’t know what happened and Tumblr support isn’t responding. That, along with the stuff involving Automattic’s CEO, made me not want to continue my media thread on tumblr. Hence, why I’ll eventually add a section to my site for the media thread come 2025.

I don’t think I’ll start up another SiIva bangers blog for a while. It was a little cumbersome to format copypasted comments to remove the relative timestamp on both sites, I didn’t get a lot of submissions for rips to showcase, and this blog deletion really demotivated me. Especially because I’d want it somewhere other than tumblr where that won’t happen. I bet Mastodon people might get a kick out of the rips but I don’t know of a good instance with Tumblr-like posting to put it on.

Actually using Bluesky (and Mastodon)

I now have enough people I follow there that I browse Bluesky before TwitterX, and I’ve even got a good enough timeline (and interactions) on Mastodon. Additionally…

Crossposting with Buffer

Because I don’t want to deal with tedious copy/pasting, I signed up with Buffer so that I could 3 way crosspost to all 3 sites, to encourage myself to post more. And I have been posting more.

Got a Playstation Vita/Welcome Park

1000 model, with an SD2Vita. Have modded it and loaded it up, but only got it this December. I’ll start playing its games once the new year rolls around.

Thing I haven’t mentioned in the media thread: I actually beat Welcome Park twice. I had to format the Vita twice due to a step I overlooked. The second time I went through while signed in to PSN and got the trophies, at least.

Didn’t use Spotify at all

When 2023 Wrapped came around and I learnt how little I used it over the year, I thought it would be funny if I avoided using it throughout the entire year. And I succeeded. Nowadays all my music listening is done through Freetube and SiIvagunner, and I’ve got iBroadcast with most of my Bandcamp purchases on the side and foobar2000, also with most of those albums and with videogame music compatability, even if I’ve barely used them this year.

But once the year is over, I do plan to open Spotify, but only to add two or so songs to my likes[1]. I didn’t throughout the entire year because I didn’t want to ruin my streak.

Well, that’s the end of the year. Alright year for stuff I did, overall. My next plans include adding the aforementioned media thread, and generally actually learning and using things like Blender and Godot.

Here’s to 2025!

  1. One I heard from Burnout 3: Takedown, the other I heard from a Tony Hawk video. Those types of games can still be a form of music discovery. ↩︎

The House Like Carpet Beat
Show full content

Finally, I’m doing a Real blog post about a specific thing. It’s been a while since I did this. This was spurred on by a tweet on Twitter and Bluesky linked at the end. I just want to spread the word.

Persona Trinity Soul

First up is an anime spinoff of Persona 3 with this song, how most people learned about the lyrics. They start at 1:12:

https://youtu.be/6plVf2T6AOo

Burning Men’s Soul

Transcript
Check it out I'm in the house like carpet And if there's too many heads in my blunt I won't spark it I'll put it in my pocket and save it like rocket fuel 'Til everybody's gone and it's cool Then I spark it up with my brother His momma named him Mo, but I call him Mo' Lover And he's more than a cover, he's a quilt We're putting shit together like that house that John built On the hill, 'cause this shit's gonna feel like velvet, turtle My style fits tighter than a girdle If ya hate it then you can just leavе it, like Beaver But in a day or two I'll makе you a true believer in me 'Cause like the alphabet you'll see That 'ism kicks a rhyme, not your everyday soliloquy Like Chef Boyardee, my rhyme is truly cookin' Peace to Matty Rich 'cause he's straight out of Brooklyn, New York I don't eat pork or swine when I dine I drink a cup of Kool-Aid, not a big glass of wine Or a Henn', Heine', if you have time I'll drop rhyme again

(taken from Genius)

You can see why it blew up a little on tumblr, and then on twitter. Strange lyrics for Persona music? No!

Sample CDs

It turns out that the lyrics come from a sample CD!

https://youtu.be/8f_VmSoZ7Z4

Masterbits CLIMAX 6 Rapsody (Vocals ll) - Swiny House

AuraOfANobody: "Like chef boyardee, my rhyme is truly cookin" stick it back in the oven it ain't fuckin done!!

So they just took it from here and dropped it in. But that would mean ANYONE could add the funny bars…

Other Uses

The meat of this post. Frustratingly I can’t use WhoSampled for this since the sample CD isn’t on there. So I’ll have to find some manually.

I remember a tweet about how a mickey mouse game used the sample, and I’m pretty sure it was the point and click/adventure one. And I was right! Disney’s Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse, song starts at 29:27.

https://youtu.be/FovkrsRmk9o

SiIvagunner made a rip of the song!

https://youtu.be/VhcsxerD7K0

QuichePotatoes: This manages to sound better than both the advertised track and the punchline then again one is from a sample pack that's meant to be messed around with not just dropped in without any actual editing and the other was intended as a serious promotion for a product.

There’s also this video link to a stream archive where they judge for a contest to use the sample in a song. I’m not watching all of that or vouching for them, just want to put it here for completness.

Toby Fox

So Toby Fox made a Bluesky account and is doing a bit to promote it. And as part of it, he became the latest sampler of House Like Carpet.

https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/1850281386042618320

(bluesky mirror, also this song was actually uploaded earlier without vocals)

And this was what inspired this post.

Use it yourself

I’ve got nothing else. Here’s the archive.org link to the sample cd, it’s on track 7.

Microblog Update

On 2024-10-06, I posted this:

I can now post to this blog without a title. So basically, I can now tweet on here or do tumblr/cohost style posts without headers. Don’t know if i’ll actually use that though. Also I can now receive webmentions. More importantly I’ve decided to move my media thread to tumblr, viewable here.

I’ve changed my mind since then. I’m going to undo the changes to my blog I’ve made for supporting microblogging, in the hopes that the site will build faster. I don’t really need one at the moment, using Bluesky/Mastodon/Twitter is easier to run, and means not having to decide on a URL for each blog post. Even if I come back to this, it’d be better to crate a separate microblog rather than making one blog system work with both. This post will remain here for archival reasons.

EDIT: It was BABIDI, not Beton Brutal. Also, added Metro Gravity.

Last year I tried posting some of the demos I liked on Cohost since other people were doing so, and I want to try it out again as something to put on my blog. But I haven’t had much patience for the demos this year so I’ll just post a quick blurb on some of the demos. I have not necessarily completed all of them either. Next Fest ends Monday.

The first demo I played, sequel to GAME OF THE YEAR: 420BLAZEIT vs xxXilluminatiXxx [wow/10 #rekt edition] - Montage Parody The Game. Did not expect this to happen. It’s exactly what it looks like. That it’s genuinely kinetic and has fun combat is even better.

Interested since it’s from the people behind Smile For Me, a pretty good game that I haven’t revisited since they updated it with now graphics and music. Just like that one, you physically nod and shake your head with mouselook to say yes or no, although this time only in the first-person sections. Now you can suck the dialogue out of characters and spit them out to other people. Want to see where this goes, ping-pong ball head.

The PS360 nostalgia wave slowly approaches ha ha. The God of War (classic) throwbacks are about to run wild. In all seriousness this is actually a game from 20 years ago finally getting released. Here’s a 2013 writeup about what happened. Bit glitchy.

I set webmentions up ages ago I think it’s finally time to test them.

I was encouraged to do so thanks to nex-3’s post, and I’m going to quote part of one below:

You should do this too! If you can edit your blog's post layout, it's extremely easy. Just add those classes to the appropriate places, and you're off to go. If you don't already have an HTML element for some piece of information, you can add invisible data tags like I did above to provide the info to consumers without changing the way your post looks to readers.

This also doubles as me adding a blockquote style. Also, here’s a post embed of said post (to show off eleventy-unfurl and add the link back).

The Cohost Retrospective

Crosspost from cohost

(this is my longest post ever. it’s also rambly since i drafted it when the announcement was newer, and tried to make some grand statement that tied everything together. since then my feelings have cooled down a little, but the sentiment remains the same.)

i don’t actually remember the day i made an account, but my notifications go back to 2022, so i’m taking that as my join year. joined because people i follow on twitter joined, stayed because those people kept posting good posts. eventually, i even managed to find new people to follow. quite a lot of new people, in fact.

“i follow people that make good posts” was pretty much the only reason I used cohost. i only ever lurked on twitter and tumblr, mostly just reblogging and retweeting. so i never got the worst of social media. no one tried to argue with me in dms, and no one tried to harass me because i pretty much didn’t exist to most people. i didn’t care if someone got mad at me for saying something slightly wrong because i didn’t say anything at all. i did make posts, but super rarely. i didn’t have any issue with post stats and numbers because those were for other people, not something I got. i tuned them out unless they were 69 or 420.

so while others were coming here to enjoy a calmer social media space, i just found a good website. it was fun seeing twitter people get introduced to a tumblr-style social media. and that was what cohost was to me. it eventually grew into something more thanks to the stuff below, but that’s what it was at first.

eventually, i even started posting myself. i think I started because i wanted to finally write posts and not just share them, to create and not read, so that I could share the things I found on the internet. That reason sounds right. And when I made posts, people liked and reblogged them. i got a lot of followers. some of staff even followed me. i got more hits here than on any other site, which is pretty ironic considering what most others like about this place. not that i thought it was anything special. i know I only got notes[1] because i made actual posts to get notes on. I would have gotten followers and even mutuals on any other website if I’d done so there. it also probably helped that i was posting when there weren’t many people here, so it was easier to get discovered here.

eventually, i got caught up in the community enough to start doing more. I posted more. I felt good when cohost got into the news and got recommended as a twitter alternative. I started sharing some of the cool things I found on the internet here, getting in the spirit of old internet revival this place fostered. those were often my most popular posts. i downloaded userscripts and extensions to patch over the unpolished parts of using this website. i even made side blogs.

I started to pick up on good habits here. checking out the profiles of people that followed me here and following back if i liked their posts. Unfollowing people if I realized I didn’t gel with their posts on my timeline. I carried those habits into other social media. I’ve unfollowed a lot of accounts on twitter, every one making it a little less addicting.

best parts of cohost itself eggbug

eggbug

one of the selling points i remember cohost touting was combining the best of twitter, tumblr, and reddit. cohost, of course, mostly took from tumblr. i don’t know of anything it took from twitter. Pretty much the only thing it took from reddit is “having a mascot”.

that being said, eggbug is easily the best thing to come out of cohost. the best mascot. lovely little guy. it’s always a delight to see him, in art, in css crimes, anything. it’s a shame i never got the plush.

css in posts

the Killer Featuretm of the site. i enjoyed experiencing every “css crime”, and it was worth some of them making mobile scrolling choppy. every one i encountered was a treat, from eggbug playground to blackle’s artworks. it felt good when the css posting got cohost into articles, in a cheerleader sort of way.

rhythm games

since audio could be played at the same time, stuff like this could happen. fun as hell times.

artist alley

turns out people will read and engage with ads on purpose if they’re optional. in all seriousness, even though I never browsed it much myself, it still felt nice that someone did that. i did install the userscript that replaced cohost corner with artist alley, though that was mostly because cohost corner was mostly pointless to be honest.

stuff i did on cohost

these are not necessarily in chronological order

post, actually post instead of just reblog

like i said, this was the first site (other than maybe my website, first social media site at least) where I actually made posts. the most iconic posts i remember doing were spreading the news of pretendo, netpass, and the spotpass archival project, the nintendo network and xbox 360 marketplace shutdown, and other such news and cool things. i even did a css crime myself, by editing the one i reblogged. there was a brief period at the start where I tried to compile cool tumblr posts I saw and bring them here, but i eventually had to stop because it wasn’t worth the effort in the end.

Actually, i think i might have been the person to bring the concept of trick or treating cohost asks during Halloween from tumblr to cohost?

finally sharing a fan character that someone made for a fake wario game presentation was good. i was originally going to say this was probably one of my first viral posts (link goes to a reblog with comments by others because the gif is really what made that post what it is). But that wasn’t true. there were viral posts i made before. i can’t check my notifications past a certain point, so I can’t tell what was my first one, and i honestly don’t care that much.

#[EGBG] Flying Eggbugs, the Titanfall 2 Network

I actually got so into the community that I created a network in tf2 to spread the word. Unfortunately, i fell off shortly after. as I say here, i guess everyone moved to northstar anyway.

start a sideblog for text lets plays

i was inspired by a post about bringing back text lets plays on cohost and wanted to go for it. i also wanted to play earthbound beginnings, so I made a blog for that. it was too hard to take snapshots that I could upload to cohost and it got annoying having to make posts as i played the game, so i abandoned that idea and deleted the blog.

@obslinks

really just me moving my tumblr sideblog here, obslinks was meant to be my version of waxy.org. eventually i stopped posting at all, for these reasons. like that shutdown post said, i wanted to mark it as archived and move on, but never got around to it until the shutdown announcement forced me to get on with it.

@siiva-bangers

what was originally going to be me highlighting funny comments on SiIvagunner videos after the 2024 april fools event produced some true bangers got simplified into siiva-bangers. that was me highlighting some of their best rips, with a touch of additional commentary in the form of me pointing out if a rip was part of an event, funny comments sometimes, and so on. i even accepted user submissions and tried to avoid spoiling the rips.

I wanted to turn it into a way someone could get introduced to the wider world of siIvagunner and high quality rips, post the quirks of the channel. it’s a shame cohost would shut down before i could do those, but I plan to send it off with a bang. I’ll be doing my own mini event where I post rips with a feeling of finality in the last week of cohost.

i don’t know if i’ll start this account on some other place again, but if I do, it’ll probably be on tumblr. I will, but only after cohost shuts down. given siiva’s history with channel ending, this seems fitting. here’s the tumblr blog.

try out a BBS

nicky’s then new Big Beautiful System seemed like a good way to finally actually try out that. didn’t stick around, but it’s a good thing that i did it at all. my message on the graffiti wall might still be there.

meet up in vrchat

I was there for only a few UCVRCG meetups, and i didn’t talk that much, sorry. never even used vrchat after i my pc got upgraded enough that it could work with vr. I only have two slots for displayport, so I’d have to disconnect one of my monitors to use the headset, which made it too much of a pain in the ass to use.

joined the puzzmo group

I also fell off puzzmo eventually, but I hope my flipart skills (and crossword attempts) helped eggbug’s little puzzle freaks in the leaderboard wars.

learnt about corru.observer

while I might have eventually learnt about corru somewhere else, i might not have gone in blind if it weren’t for cohost, which was the best way to experience it. I’ll always be glad I did it that way.

start a media thread

after seeing people on twitter start one I wanted to do the same myself. i think media threads are one of the best ways to make you write a post. this youtube essay has even better arguments for a media thread that reaffirmed my commitment to doing this.

it’s a shame that I won’t be able to have everything I played/watched/read this year on cohost. I have no idea where i’ll be posting my media thread for the rest of the year.

things i didn’t like about cohost

I don’t want to give the impression my time with cohost was all positive. maybe partially because I don’t want to be seen as a dickrider.

tag-only reblogs didn’t show up in notifications

as someone who actively uses tumblr, this never felt like a good idea, and is one of the main improvements from popover notification scripts. most of the fun I got from posting a pic of a scolipede plush was people reacting in the tags, mostly going #OUGH. it wouldn’t have been nearly as good if I didn’t see those tags, and I know some of the best comments and reactions to people’s posts were in tags only, and that they might have never seen them.

i guess I should have argued for it more (on my account and in the forums) and that staff should have implemented the feature.

lack of polish/never got true api support

while it eventually got to a point where the browser webapp was good enough, it’s a shame cohost never got a true app, something that would have made something as simple as retaining your exact spot in the timeline easier. in general the website would have been painful to use without userscripts and extensions.

i wouldn’t have minded something like bluesky’s custom feed system for example. hell, imagine a cohost client that came with an eggbug tamagotchi.

“discourse events”

to be honest, it was only unpleasant because (at least for the ones I remember) they were right. staff should have implemented a dark mode sooner, for example. most counterarguments amounted to trying to figure out what working on cohost is like, something fundamentally only staff would know. any other criticism i could think would basically be tone policing. and I couldn’t blame them because stirring up a shitstorm in order to get dark mode WORKED. and might have been the necessary thing to do.

ultimately, it was unpleasant to scroll through cohost when they were happening.

racism

while I at lease never saw the racism forsthand i felt it’s effects. i saw someone i follow, who i first encountered on cohost leave because of this. i don’t really have anything to say about this, other than this was objectivley a faliure on the part of staff, and any future things that plan to build off of cohost need to improve on.

the long stretches of no improvements

cohost was at it’s best when everyone was playing around with the hot new toy staff dropped. it felt great to see a new place grow, to cheerlead cohost into blossoming into something special. those periods of no updates to cohost made it slightly boring.

those were not helped by external factors (florida) and human error (forgetting to post updates). related: staff’s attempt to build an intergrated patreon competitor into cohost at the expense of core updates was a mistake. I don’t blame them too much, i presume it seemed like a better idea at the time. but it was clear cohost was both understaffed and (in hindsight) that staff were slightly out of there league.

it was the users of cohost that were the main draw, and the only thing keeping it good by sharing cool things, making good jokes, and just hanging out. it was as the landing page of cohost said: the value of social media is its posts.

unfunny memes

carbon ryan reynolds and love honk weren’t funny and i guess it’s time i finally say it.

some parting words

here’s a draft i never finished about my thoughts whenever people post about their finances. the title is a bit awkward now that cohost is shutting down proper, but I stand by some of my points.

unfinished draft ### cohost will be fine and even if it shuts down, we will survive

because your doomposting is annoying and cringe.

cohost will be fine because they’ve been in this place since they were born. this exact scenario played out last year (people worrying about them operating at a loss). they’ll probably survive this if they survived all the other years, even if the funder ghosts them (again). if other social networks survived operating at a loss, so will cohost, regardless of size. how the hell are we supposed to know what will happen in the future anyway. or what’s going on in their end. don’t bother worrying about things you can’t control.

even if cohost shuts down, we’ll be fine. we’ll always find each other on other places. i wouldn’t despair if cohost dies. it’ll be a little sad, but cohost is just a social media site.

i guess i figured something big would have needed to happen to take down cohost. I guess a -100% change in net profit counts.

but the point is, i believed we all could handle cohost shutting down. that everyone who wanted to find each other will do so again. that even though it will be sad because losing a place that you enjoyed is inherently sad, we could still move on.

but learning about the shutdown (from this tweet) still managed to take me by surprise. i was only accepting of the shutdown, not expecting it.

that being said, seeing everyone start blogs, post resources about rss, start websites and discords to keep some of the userbase together, even convincing me to finally up my website’s features. i think that will be kind of like seeing flowers grow from the ashes, turning into a beautiful garden. cohost might be dying, but at least people are making their web prescene their own out of it.

also, at least it’s going down on a good note and not because people started to hate it.

honestly, given the issues of cohost that did exist, maybe it was never meant to be the one to succeed. maybe it was always meant to be a stepping stone to something better, whether that would be a new social media site or no more social media sites. just because it failed to be profitable doesn’t mean the core ideas were bad. the amount of users who enjoyed cohost and no other social media site proves that. this post sums it up, i think.

what happens next

in the immediate aftermath, we all will be doing a lot of leaning up. removing the app icon from phones, deleting the browser bookmarks, cleaning up all the cohost userscripts and extensions, removing the links to our cohost profiles or marking them as archives within our other socials and websites. then, of course, we settle in on our new homes.

much will be bandied around about what cohost (read: staff) could have and should have done if it wanted to stay afloat. arguments will be made regarding the realities of web development, the mistakes of staff, external factors, features that should have been implemented, and so on, by all sides. people will argue whether stuff like not showing metrics and keeping one’s likes, followers, and following private is a valued and beloved feature or a mistake. did stripe’s policy change do it in or was it because staff tried to add tipping in the first place? of course, we can never definitively say that cohost died because of one singular thing. we can only speculate on what would have changed if various things had gone differently. it’s all in the past anyway.

i wonder how long those cohost tools will be online. in the case of things that basically spit out html with css style tags (prechoster, the backloggd and letterboxd post formatter, the chatlog generator), those can be repurposed for general use on websites.

it sounds like the code could be used to do something. don’t know what. as long as eggbug rights aren’t locked away, i’m fine.

it sounded like cohost was a super friendly place for nsfw creators[2]. i hope they can find another place that treats them as kindly. same for artists who want their image quality to be as retained as possible during compression.

maybe sometime in the future a new social media site aimed at reviving cohost will appear. i can’t quite tell. on one hand when social media sites die, their features don’t tend to get copied, so there might not be another social media site that would let users use css in posts. there’s still no 6-second video site after Vine shut down[3]. then again, Spacehey, literally a clone of myspace classic, recently got to 1 million users. regardless, hopefully someone can take the best parts of cohost into consideration when making their thing.

maybe in the distant future cohost retrospectives start getting uploaded onto blogs, other social media, and youtube videos. maybe they’ll be made by cohost users.

conclusion

i’ve always thought of cohost as an anti-virality social network. something designed against getting popular, a place that placed as much control as it could in the hands of users regarding how much of themselves they want to put out there. an argument that more fame meant more problems.

of course, it was a lot more to many. a place to cleanse themselves of toxicity from the rest of the internet. a place to unlearn bad habits. a place to be themselves, no longer needing to contort your thoughts in order to get by an algorithm[4]. people made friends, and presumably lovers, here. at least one person had their life saved thanks to cohost.

to me, however, this was where i finally started being social on social media. a place where i glimpsed the potential of css as posts. where I actually contributed to the community.

to hell with it, now that cohost’s dying, i’m using chutils to finally see my follower count.

it’s 239 @siiva-bangers is 52 and @obslinks is 74

that’s a lot of people. considering how few bots are here. more than i ever had anywhere else.

to every one that followed me here, thank you. to everyone that i followed, even if i eventually unfollowed you, it was nice to meet you. to everyone that followed obslinks and siiva-bangers, or even that deleted lets play blog, or joined Flying Eggbugs, thank you. to everyone who liked, reblogged (with or without tags/comments), or commented on my posts, or sent me an ask, on ANY of my pages, thank you. to everyone who responded to my asks, thank you.

to staff, you made a good social media site with good ideas. that you never made a profit doesn’t change that.

to whoever in the future is hoping to build off of cohost, i hope you can look at the successes and failures of staff and everyone else and make something better.

and finally, to eggbug, have a big hug from me

i’ll see everyone elsewhere. THANK YOU FOR PLAYING…
  1. if i may use tumblr terminology here ↩︎

  2. “artists” sounds too restrictive, and i don’t want to assume everything that was nsfw here was porn. ↩︎

  3. that’s popular enough for me to know of, anyway ↩︎

  4. if you think about it, by not having an algorithm arbitrarily reward posts, cohost is actually great at fostering free speech. ↩︎

RSS feed for updates finally added!

At long last!

If any of you have subscribed to my blog RSS and haven’t checked in on my website you’ll notice that I have not updated in a while. That’s because creating a new post is kind of a pain and I might consider looking into getting a CMS. that or i just use social media.

if you have been looking at my website, however, you might notice I’ve been adding a lot of new features. when the cohost shutdown announcement came out, everyone scrambled to build their own websites, and RSS was a big talking point. I’ve always wanted to add an RSS feed for my site updates, something I update MUCH more frequently than this blog, and the deadline for cohost going read-only was good motivation.

Point is, if you want to keep up with what I add to my site, which is mostly new entries in the various Megacollections, copy this URL into your feed reader:

https://obspogon.neocities.org/updates.xml

also finally added, the iframe on the front page now only shows the 5 most recent updates, to not load my entire update history on every page load. i know that was only text and thus not that big, but still. also, I’ve added a link to both RSS feeds in the of my site, including the one to this blog finally, which should help feedreaders find them.

How to download software from GitHub
Show full content

Crosspost from cohost

Github page of Doom Retro, annotated to highlight Releases, Code Button (download as Zip), and About and Website link.

Remember in the early days of cohost when people debated if it’s hard to find the download link for things on github? Spurred on by a recent post, I did the obvious solution and wrote a guide for doing that. Use the above image as a guide.

The Guide

Using the Doom Retro github as an example.

Most software

Simply put, downloads on GitHub are called Releases because you release them, so to download software, click on the releases section on the side, which should also have the latest version. You’ll then be taken to the latest release version page for the thing, where you can see the download links below the patch notes. Simply click the version you want.

Technically, you can also click on the word “releases” in the sidebar, or that blue hyperlink. Those will take you to all releases published on GitHub. Just use the links in the box marked with the green “Latest” label.

Most other edge cases

If you can see the readme file below the code, check if it has a link for where to download. The website link below the description in the top of the sidebar might also have a direct download link (as is the case with Doom Retro), or just host the app itself if it’s a web app.

Things that are just the code

Not something normal people should expect to see, here just in case. Basically, click on the green “Code” button and download it as a zip.

Userscripts

Again, just in case. Within the main panel that shows all the code files, click on the one that ends in .user.js. If you have Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey installed, it should prompt you to install. You may need to click on the Raw button to get just the text.

Discussion about the second part below the cut

Why do people have trouble downloading apps from Github/Why is it like this?

Github is a place for developers. Its primary purpose is to host code. The main view when you look at software is the code. That’s the big panel with all the files and folders. It does not care as much about being a place to download software. That’s why the place to download software is in the sidebar and not on the main page. It doesn’t consider it as important to devs.

When people who aren’t techies go and download something, they are looking for a download button. They do not think in terms of releases because they are not software developers, so they won’t go looking for a Releases section, because they want a Download button.

How to fix WiiLink Kirby TV channel Error 370400
Show full content

Crosspost from Cohost

had this issue for a long time and finally fixed it thanks to the discord. but i don’t want anyone else to have to stumble around since there’s no article out there telling you how to fix it. so i’m making this post here and on my website and letting (and helping) SEO take the wheel.

i think whenever we find a fix for our problems in an obscure forum or discord we should post about it and make it more accessible from now on. helps decentralize information.

this error is caused seemingly by not installing the channel properly. per the wiilink guide, you may have gotten Error -1022 when installing the WAD and didn’t uninstall. My fix (assuming knowledge of wiilink and wii wad patching):

  1. uninstall the channel
  2. redownload the patched kirby tv WAD from the WiiLink patcher and move it to the Wii SD card
  3. reinstall the wad. this time, make sure you uninstall and install the wad again if you get Error -1022.

I did this while reinstalling Photo Channel with the english version first and i got the error then, but not when installing kirby tv. i also used YAWMM ModMii Edition for installing the wad.

How I manage this website
Show full content

hey, i haven’t used this blog much at all. i don’t really have much i want to write is the thing. i’d rather just add to the megacollections.

that being said, this post was originally written on cohost. I thought it would fit here too.

Editor: Visual Studio Code

It’s pretty good.

Static Site Generator: Eleventy

If you don’t know: SSGs take in some files and spit out plain HTML/CSS/JS, ready to upload. They let you do things like use variables and reuse parts of your website without having to copy and paste. Eleventy installation is admittedly a bit more advanced than other options since it’s just a Node.js package, but it was the simplest option for me to transition from manual. My primary templating language (what powers SSGs and what they turn into basic HTML) is Nunjucks, but some of my source files are also HTML and Markdown.

Host: Neocities

Good place.

Source Control/Autodeployment: Github

This is the actual reason I wanted to write this. I use a Github Action called Deploy to Neocities that lets me automatically and easily change my website without having to upload any files through the Web GUI or command line thing, or have to subscribe to Neocities for WebDAV.

Basically my process is this
  1. change what i need to change in my source file.
  2. use VSCode’s git panel to commit and push to github without having to use the command line
  3. let Deploy to Neocities build the website and add them all to neocities
Bonus advantage

If neocities ever dies, I can easily move to any other host.

Deltarune Speculation
Show full content

Ever since Deltarune Chapter 2 dropped I haven’t stopped thinking about it so here’s some assorted thoughts. Spoilers.

This is a very old post, made before I made this blog.

Berdly will return

People have been wondering if Berdly will return or not due to the Weird Route, some believing that by having a route where he dies, he can’t be too important to the story. I think the Weird Route proves he will be a little important. After all, it would be weird if an important character dies.

I only said he’d be a little important, though. He’ll probably mostly be comic relief, like how he was in Chapter 2.

Potential Irony

Susie mistakes Noelle’s crush on her as being onto them and the Dark World. What if Ralsei’s crush is actually being onto Kris being possessed and/or dead? He already blushes based on the SOUL.

Sans could be in on the Vessel

I remember something about the Vessel creation sequence having unused strings that sound like a grocery shopping list. And we know how important unused strings are to the lore ™.

Toriel might know about the Kris SOUL thing.

Not the full picture, of course, but might know that they rip it out.

Dess is severely ill

Enough to not be at home, but not dead. Based off a video about Noelle that also noted her line about everything in the Dark World being cured with a single spell.

My Doomkit

I’ve been meaning to write this for years now and I’ve finally got the motivation. Here’s how I play and organize Doom and it’s many, many mods.

This is a very old post, made before I made this blog.

Top Level Folder

I use this fork of ZDoom Launcher to launch mods, and create .zdl files to quickly open the games I want. Especially useful for conversions.

My WADs Folder

Here’s how I organize my WADs. The IWADs directory holds all the classic wads to patch (Doom, Heretic, Chex Quest). The doom_complete wad was made with Wadsmoosh and contains all the classic Doom episodes.

Map WADs

For each WAD, I keep a folder with the name of the wad and in the folder I put in whatever came with the download. If it only comes with a wad file, I also like to add an internet shortcut to where I downloaded the mod from.

Source Ports

The Source Ports I have. I mainly use GZDoom and keep the rest for fun.

Utilities

Various tools I keep on hand.

standalones

The Standalones folder is where I keep the Doom mods that come as a standalone download with their own preconfigured engine or whatever.

POOM

I even keep a downloaded copy of the PICO-8 demake of Doom.

I want you to know that I encourage people to get into Doom mods. There’s a lot of cool stuff out there. By the way, I also keep a similar setup for Build Engine games (Duke Nukem, Blood) and Quake. Maybe I could do a similar post on those.

I beat the final boss with savestates.

Very nice moment was when I learnt you could peck the enemies that pop out of walls.

You can tell how this built on Mario 64. Stars unlocked more worlds AND more of the hub, so they split the difference. Jiggies unlock worlds, and notes unlock the rest of the hub. Although, I don’t see why they used notes for the breadcrumb collectibles. There doesn’t seem to be any relation with music I can find. Maybe Banjo-Tooie will explain? I don’t want to jump in now.

Wasn’t nice to learn that the N64 version uses a note score system, where you need to collect all the notes in one go, instead of the XBLA’s regular collectible system.

My theory on how Among Us rose to popularity
Show full content

This is me writing out a series of patterns that I observed when Among Us rose in popularity and fitting them together. This is how a flash game made one of the biggest games of 2020.

This is a very old post, made before I made this blog.

Henry Stickman

The banner image for Henry Stickman collection

The Henry Stickman series are 6 pretty fun Flash choose-your-own-adventure Newgrounds games about selecting an option to progress the story, or failing and seeing what funny thing happens. I played them as a kid. They also got rereleased on Steam. The important thing is that Innersloth, the people who made Among Us, also made Henry Stickman. Note that the remaster was released on 7 Aug (2020).

The Distraction Dance Tiktok meme

Just look at this Know Your Meme article for more. And yes, I did remember seeing this around on Tiktok (though KYM also mentions Youtube and Twitter examples) a little after the Henry Stickman Collection release.

Among Us Search Trends

Google tends graph of Among Us, starting to rise August 2 to 8

This is my final bullet. Look at this trend. [Verify it yourself.](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=among us) This proves that the Henry Stickman Collection is what made Among Us blow up. People bought the collection, looked through their other stuff, saw Among Us, played it, and shared it. Maybe the videomakers saw it and started streaming it, showing off how good a streaming game it is. Maybe Steam started recommending Among Us to everyone who bought the collection. Whatever way, Henry Stickman made Among Us famous.

Bonsai Barber Title Screen

This is a very old post, made before I made this blog.

I’ve been playing this WiiWare game recently, and what follows are some thoughts I had.

All I knew before going in was that this was a good WiiWare game Nintendo published. I didn’t know that it operated on daily check-ins.
The game is about cutting the hairs of anthropomorphic fruit and vegetables, which are actually made of leaves and branches. You know, like a bonsai tree. You open the game every day and get a few customers to cut. You get scissors and a razor, and even a comb. You also get a camera for photos and a paintbrush with some colors to paint the leaves.

You are supposed to cut each customers’ hair into a specified stencil (their choice or yours, sometimes it also specifies how you need to color it) and ring a gong when you’re ready to finish. You can take as much time as you want, and can finish anytime. You are also graded on a 5 star rank for every haircut.

It’s pretty fun! So far it keeps switching things up and stay fresh. Its even become part of my daily routine. Honestly better at staying fresh than Animal Crossing (or at least just New Horizons).
