Two pop art

Marilyn Monroe has fascinated me since I was a child. I was probably ten years old when I asked my dad “why is Marilyn Monroe so famous?” He answered something like “well, she was a symbol of American beauty and hope. She burned bright but tragically died young.” I was intrigued and watched Marilyn’s movies whenever they showed on cable. Seeing her on screen, I was mesmerized by her allure, her humor, and her vulnerability. I might not have been able to articulate it as a young person, but Marilyn had range and nuance that were magnetic and I leaned in. Later in high school I became interested in pop art and one of the genre’s most famous series of images are Andy Warhol’s Marilyn portraits. Warhol’s Marilyns are superb in their use of color and effectively achieve his goal of reducing her to a high-contrast iconic, but impersonal representation. However, iconic glamour is only one dimension of Marilyn. When I was presented with the opportunity to make art of Marilyn based on photos by Milton H. Greene from 1956 when she was at the height of her powers, I was struck by the intimacy and vulnerability of the images. To me, these images called for a much more delicate approach compared to Warhol’s in order to convey more nuance and humanity. Even though Marilyn showed courage and conviction fighting for civil rights, equality, and against McCarthyism, her mental health struggles are widely recognized. I felt it was important to depict her precarious dance between wide-eyed aspiration and shying away from the glare of the spotlight. I hope these images, “Marilyn Sunrise” and “Marilyn Sunset” inspire an empathetic look at Marilyn’s complex humanity and remind us that we are all teetering between strength and fragility.

This mural, “Peace is Power,” is meant to encourage us to strive for health and peace for humanity and the planet that sustains us. Peace is not the absence of disagreement, but the ability to resolve disagreements without violence. Peace takes more thought, more kindness, more diplomacy, and more creativity, but the result is a more powerful investment in our collective future. The dove is internationally recognized as a symbol of peace, making it an ideal communication tool. I hope the message reaches all who see it across nations and cultures. -Shepard

This “Third Eye Open Peace” mural in Naples incorporates a portrait I originally made for my Make Art Not War print back during the Iraq War. The mural is a public art companion piece to my “Power To the Peaceful” exhibition opening at Gallerie D’Italia on May 6th. I have long promoted peace through my art and activism and this mural incorporates a peace sign and peace text (PACE in Italian) while also including a third eye blooming like a flower, The third eye represents a dialogue with one’s inner self, higher consciousness, and a quest for enlightenment, all of which are essential to achieve peace and harmony. I’ve often used the phrase “eyes open-mind open” and I think “third eye open” is a similar but slightly weightier idea because it addresses looking not only outward to observe, but inward as well. If we can connect with our own humanity we can have empathy for others. Thank to my sponsors Poltrona Frau, La Reggia Designer Outlet, and Montana Cans for helping make this all happen. Also, big thank you to Cultura Napoli, Wunderkammern Gallery, and Inward Creativa Urbana, and my team Dan Flores, Rob Zagula, and Jonathan Furlong for all of your hard work this week! -Shepard

This mural, which is part of the Dear Iran project, was inspired by what Dear Iran’s founder Reza Moazezi, had created with the tulip. The tulip is a flower that has symbolism in Iran, but it is also a flower I find to be really beautiful. I use flowers in a lot of my art because I find that they are very universal and help to bridge gaps culturally. Every different nation, every different culture, and every different religion finds flowers beautiful and symbolically powerful. Flowers are about hope and resilience. So with what’s going on in Iran, doing my version of the tulip growing from the barbed wire was a way of supporting the project. It was a way of using some of the same iconography that people will see in the Dear Iran project and showing a bit of solidarity on human rights no matter where you are.

-Shepard

“Someone very special has stood up for the voiceless people of Iran at a time when no one outside of our community really has. This great human, who is so comfortable in his humanity that he is not worried about how others perceive his activism.

At a time when they are trying hard to separate us, he not only stood up, his heroism has cascaded a whole culture to stand up and bring awareness to the atrocities that are happening to the people of Iran. Thank you Mr Shepard Fairey for being who you are.”

– Reza Moazezi, Founder of Dear Iran

This new “Uplift Justice” offset is based on a mural I painted in Philadelphia last year.  It was important to me to create an image in Philly, a city often considered the birthplace of American democracy, that connects the ideals of the past with the questions we face today. Nearly 250 years after the founding of this country, we have an opportunity to ask ourselves what the next 250 years should look like—a continuation of where we’re headed, or maybe a reset.
I chose a woman as the central figure because I see women as natural peacemakers, builders of family and community—the qualities we need most right now. My hope is that this art invites people to reflect on justice, history, and the values that guide us today and into the future.

This “Ominous Ripples” print is a metaphor for the environmental peril we have created and the struggles future generations will face just to navigate climate-related problems like super storms, drought, famine, population displacement, and, of course, rising sea levels. We are already treading water, drowning and suffocating even if many of us haven’t comprehended the scale of the problem or reach of the ripples yet. The lack of progress on climate change and pollution is largely due to the oversized influence of deep-pocketed oil companies. Billionaires, corporations, and politicians aren’t going to save the planet so we the people need to support a transition to responsible energy sources. This Earth Day, I am proud to support Greenpeace because they uplift the people – grassroots activists, determined researchers, climate champions – who actually do the work. From fighting Big Oil in court to running campaigns that change policy…they are unrelenting. Please join me in making a contribution if you’re able to (and gifts will be matched 4x on Earth Day, so your support will go even further!) Visit: greenpeace.org/usa/earth

Last month, hundreds of people picked up “Paid Agitator” and “Domestic Terrorist” protest posters to participate in the No Kings March. Each person marching that day showed up because they believe in democracy. These prints serve as a mirror to those committing the dehumanizing attacks on immigrants and protesters and for ICE and the Trump administration to experience their own rhetoric thrown back at them. These prints are a mirror, not a solution. The solution is to treat all people with dignity and as equally human. A number of prints were set aside for people who couldn’t come to pick them up and signed versions will be going on sale this week. Every citizen deserves to have a voice in how our country is shaped. We all matter in the United States and we all have power.

HENI is thrilled to release ‘Invaded & Commanded Blossom,‘ a series of two limited-edition prints by Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst, and Invader. The prints are based on works currently on view at the ‘Triple Trouble’ exhibition at Newport Street Gallery.

In the Invaded & Commanded Blossom prints, Invader and Fairey overlay Hirst’s cherry blossoms with Space Invaders and the Obey Icon motif. Invader’s pixelated Space Invaders reference the icons of early video games, through which the artist questions the invasion of the digital world into our daily lives, while Fairey’s Obey Icon face is a symbol that encourages viewers to find their own interpretations of the world around them. These motifs have become synonymous with the careers of both artists and are joined here with scenes from Hirst’s celebrated Cherry Blossoms series, which captures the spontaneous joy of spring through colourful views of sprawling tree branches and gravity-defying blossoms.

The editions are Gloss Diasec-mounted Giclée print on aluminium composite panel. The works measure 120 x 96 cm and will be numbered and hand-signed on the label by the respective artists.

The prints are available to purchase until April 6 at 10:00 AM PDT. The number of editions will be limited by demand during the release window. Application and more details can be found here.

The original paintings, sculptures, installations and mosaics in the ‘Triple Trouble’ show are also available by application on HENI Primary until March 29.

Brave New Films will be hosting the premiere of new short documentary ICE: No One Is Safe.

Shepard Fairey created this poster after learning about Emmanuel Garcia – a 15-year-old autistic boy detained by ICE. Fairey turned Emmanuel’s story into a powerful message: When it comes to ICE, No One Is Safe.

The screening event will feature a conversation between Brave New Films’ founder Robert Greenwald and Miguel A. Santana of the California Community Foundation. There will also be a roundtable discussion with disability experts, with opportunities for audience questions.

The virtual screening event will take place on Sunday, March 22 at 7PM PDT.

This screen print, “Modular Sound and Vision” takes its name from the David Bowie song “Sound and Vision” and the gift of sound and vision that he embodies. This art is based on a piece from my solo exhibition MODULAR FREQUENCY, which showcases my explorations of distillation and synthesis, combining imagery, symbols, and text woven into geometric compositions. Bowie is one of my favorite musicians, and has crafted his music and visual presentation with equal brilliance. Music has long been an inspiration for me as a democratic medium that can bring joy, but also deliver provocative and compelling social commentary. My hope is this new body of work engages viewers in an aesthetic “frequency”—pulling them into an ideal rhythm and harmony that celebrates brave thinkers and artistic icons like David Bowie.

Red circular pin

As reported by Alex Ritman for Variety:

Artists4Ceasefire has a new pin badge just in time for the 2026 Oscars ceremony.

With just hours to go until the 98th Academy Awards, the collective of actors, filmmakers and other artists — which as per its description has been calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and a “just and lasting peace” between Palestinians and Israelis since late 2023 — has unveiled the new pin that it will be distributing ahead of Sunday night’s ceremony at the Dolby Theater.

Designed by Shepard Fairey, the pins feature a dove carrying a lotus flower with a barbed wire stem, an image the group says embodies “hope, resilience and a just peace.” According to Artists4Ceasefire, which was started two weeks after the Oct. 7 attacks, the heart above the flower “reinforces the power of leading with love, reminding us all that love for humanity includes a commitment to liberation and freedom for all people — from Palestine and Lebanon, to Iran, Sudan, Minnesota and beyond.”

“Humanity and justice are not privileges reserved for some of us; they belong to all people, without exception,” said Fairey. “Art has the ability to remind us that, before borders and boundaries, we are all citizens of this planet first. This collaboration with Artists4Ceasefire serves as a reminder that love for all people is not the absence of justice and accountabliity — it is a necessity. My hope is that this image speaks to the power of solidarity and serves as a reminder that when we come together, the seeds of compassion, dignity and freedom can break through.”

While it’s as-yet unknown which stars will be wearing the new design on the Oscars red carpet, the previous Artists4Ceasefire badge has become a familiar presence at awards shows over the last two years. Attendees at the 2024 Academy Awards — including Billie Eilish, Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, Riz Ahmed, Mahershala Ali and Finneas O’Connell — were seen sporting the pin, as was Kaouther Ben Hania, who returns this year with international film nominee “The Voice of Hind Rajab.” Meanwhile, Javier Bardem and Megan Stalter wore the pin at the 2025 Emmy Awards.

Other stars known for wearing the Artists4Ceasefire pin include Susan Sarandon, Phoebe Bridgers, Nicola Coughlan and Hannah Einbinder.

Introducing Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition by Shepard Fairey × Poltrona Frau—the first release of our 2026 collection.

Poltrona Frau and Shepard Fairey weave their respective visions together to create the new Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition: a cultural statement that brings together street art and Italian savoir-faire in a unique dialogue between art, care for nature, innovation, and timeless beauty.

Designed in 2009 by Jean-Marie Massaud, Archibald is one of Poltrona Frau’s most iconic armchairs, a synthesis of sculptural elegance and comfort.

Today, the interpretation by Shepard Fairey, one of the most influential voices in contemporary street art, amplifies its legacy, transforming it into a contemporary manifesto: an invitation to pause, observe, and recognize the preciousness and vulnerability of our connection with nature.

We are all hanging by a thread, even flowers and nature. We human beings should learn to move with the same delicacy and awareness as the animals and small birds, who, when they land, do so with infinite lightness, understanding the need to respect and preserve the very thread that sustains them. -Shepard

Archibald Delicate Balance will be officially presented during Milano Design Week 2026. Only 200 numbered pieces, available exclusively at a curated selection of Poltrona Frau flagship stores and authorized retailers worldwide.

Artists ADD FUEL and Shepard Fairey have teamed up to collaborate on another new screen print. “Frequency” is a follow up to their first collaboration, “Modular,” which was released back in 2022. Limited edition screen prints of “Frequency” that are signed by both artists will be available for sale in the Obey Giant Store starting on Thurs, March 12 at 10AM PT.

Just over three years after the release of my first collaboration with Shepard Fairey, the print Modular (2022), I’m now proud to unveil the result of our second chapter together.
If Modular explored construction and structure, in 2026 we present Frequency: a new approach in which pattern takes on a central and decisive role.
In this collaboration, pattern is worked and reworked as an active element. I revisited, rethought, and redesigned some of the most iconic motifs from Shepard’s visual universe, creating a new composition where our two visual languages converge.
The result is an alignment of visual discourse, two distinct grammars operating on the same frequency.

I love combining our two styles, the graphic and pattern motifs of my art and ADD FUEL’s traditional Portuguese tile work mixed with playful illustrations, to reveal a new composition as a complement and extension of the last. Frequency builds on the layers and rips, activating and revealing connection and contrast. I love ADD FUEL’s visual language and I’m happy to keep the conversation going.
