consideration
for the feelings
of other people
is something
we are taught
by the example
of those we
look up to
and something
we all learn
from the way
other people
treat us
when we're
growing up
that can be
used by the
unscrupulous
to manipulate
the powerless

some decisions
cannot
be explained
for they weren't
yours to make
only to manage
while cleansing
your mouth of
the taste of
bitter surprise

convictions
are not
resources
to gather
and display
like some
museum
exhibition
unused and
untouched
by the world
but instead
the priorities
that guide
our lives in
choices made
and actions
spent

In which I read a romance novella by Suleikha Snyder.

Bad-boy biker meets good girl working in the family Indian restaurant. Trucker Carrigan and Pinky Grover’s instant chemistry makes no sense on the surface. But underneath all the layers lies need, want, laughter, and connection. With orgasms. *lol*

I really like these characters. They only seem easy to sum up, but they’re hiding depths under the surface. And it’s like they sense it in each other. And they bring out layers the other thought they’d lost or buried or hidden. It’s the depths that appeal and that tickles me. Pinky with her spoiler thwarted grad studies, Trucker and his redacted. They banter and tease and are, quite frankly, adorable.

I confess that I searched out this book in part from following the author on social media. She recently wrote a blog post about the good-girlification (my phrase, not hers) of sex scene in the romance genre that I found thoughtful and honestly pretty spot on. And I figured it was time to check in the library had any of her work. I’m really glad they did because not only was this a fun read, there are some really great example of sex scenes that are steamy and hot and unique. And they make consent sexy.

“He didn’t kiss like it was foreplay, or a preview of what was to come. He kissed like it was the beginning, the middle, and the end. Unselfishly[.]” Hot and tender? Delightful.

“He looked like heroism and hedonism’s beautiful bastard.” Now that paints a picture!

“Every time their gazes locked, they negotiated consent anew.” Verbal check ins, enthusiastic agreement, condom usage, and visual cues? Bestill my heart.

And I’m throwing this one in purely because it made me laugh and I love that in a romance.

“I hadn’t bothered to put on my only matching lingerie set underneath, since I didn’t yet know how rough Trucker could be on a pair of panties. That shit was expensive. If he was going tear something in his haste to get it on, it was damn well going to be Fruit of the Loom.”

Bwahaha, that is so real! 😅

Two figures flirting behind a black pickup truck. One is a bearded blond in jeans and a Captain America t-shirt and he's making eyes at woman of Indian descent who's wearing a jean skirt and t-shirt and looking over her shoulder at him.

each of us
holds a lie
buried deep
somewhere
left to grow
as if planted
in a garden
of shadows
still waiting
to be found
by the light
and warmth
of forgotten
springtime

our
fragile
stubborn
robust
delicate
hearts
can be
the first
to fall
having fled
long before
the end
or the last
standing
clinging on
long after
expiration
because
the heart
sturdy
yielding
frail
caustic
can tell
no lies
