Turns out that video processing on the CPU isn't very fast
1 - The CPU # Note, there’s more the a CPU on some of these boards. On the big one, only the square thing in the middle is the CPU, on the pi-0 (the board with the HDMI and USB Ports) the CPU is under the metal heat sink - and in truth the CPU is actually an SOC (System On a Chip) - more on that in a bit. Finally, on the blue board, the CPU is only the black chip in the middle, though in this case it is again the definition is blurred, as in truth this is a microcontroller. This will all make sense shortly! These are CPUs or Central Processing Units. They’re the beating heart of your computer, doing the number crunching. The white, rectangular one is of one of the first CPUs in the lineage leading up to CPUs like the ones used in desktop’s today, with further successors shown in order from top left to the bottom right. The metal-capped one at the bottom right, while a tad old, is visually quite representative of a modern desktop CPU, though the CPUs in a laptop or smart phone do look quite different still.
Tip!: Hardware-accelerated streaming is a premium feature and requires an active Plex Pass subscription. To play your video smoothly and...
Hey! Listen! This post is part of a series on the DeskMini H470 as a hypervisor. Check them all out! It has a 2c/4t 15W laptop CPU (Core i3-7100U), with 2x 16GB Crucial DDR4, and a 512GB Samsung 860 Pro. While it served me well over these years, I’ve outgrown the CPU and cooling solution.
Growing up in England I’ll openly admit that American Football isn’t my first choice of sport, however, by anyone's standards, American Football is huge. Last year Amazon started live streaming Thursda...
Plex is a popular media server for self-hosting, but it's not open source and recently locked the ability to remotely stream your own content behind a paywall, so one cannot be blamed for seeking an alternative to Plex. Jellyfin is a free and open source self-hosted media server that just might be what you're looking for.
Video transcoding on the fly allows delivery of right sized content
Talos is an immutable operating system designed to only run Kubernetes. The advantage of Talos is an out-of-the-box Kubernetes install, as well as a smaller attack surface, and easier maintenance.
Taking advantage of hardware acceleration can drastically reduce both CPU and power usage when playing video, enabling seemingly innocuous chips — like the Intel N100, to render multiple 4K video streams.
In my previous article we took a look at how to bootstrap K3s with Cilium starting from a fresh Debian 12 network installation.
One part devlog, one part narrative, this piece takes you through my entire journey to build a self hosted Spotify replacement.
