⚡️ Not a bolt, but a whisper
<p>Hello! I'm Gina Trapani and once a month I round up the 10 best posts from my blog <a href="https://notetoself.studio/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">Note to Self</a> in this newsletter. When the last issue arrived in my inbox, the first thing I saw was a big honkin' typo. Here's to practice over perfection.</p>
<ol>
<li>I summited <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/one-monkey-mind-s-10-day-silent-meditation-course/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">a personal mental mountain</a> at my first 10-day silent meditation course. It was hard!</li>
<li>I didn't have any sort of revelation. Epiphanies are rarer than we think. When you ask a big question, the answer arrives not as a lightning bolt, but as <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/a-whisper-or-a-notion/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">a whisper</a>.</li>
<li>A perfect phrase for the moment serves as both an indictment and a rallying call: Dan Sinker calls this <a href="https://dansinker.com/posts/2025-05-23-who-cares/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">the Who Cares Era</a>. The most radical thing we can do is care.</li>
<li>When you wonder how someone achieved their success: the answer is always that they <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/work-and-luck/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">worked hard and got lucky</a>.</li>
<li>Just like "life hack," "vibe code" became too broad an umbrella term to be useful. When someone says they vibe-coded an app, my first question is: <a href="https://blog.val.town/vibe-code?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">How much of it do you understand?</a></li>
<li>All our ideas are downstream from the the ideas we take in. Garbage in, garbage out. That's why I'm setting up a new-old system for <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/inputs-and-output/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">intentional inputs</a>.</li>
<li>Jenn Schiffer left her tech job and turned her pixel art into <a href="https://bugsrock.online?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">handmade candles</a> that were a hit in my house.</li>
<li>It’s common to look back at intense, adrenaline-driven times in one's career and feel nostalgia for the clarity of focus, but <a href="https://notetoself.studio/quote/intensity-vs-passion/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">don't confuse intensity and passion</a>.</li>
<li>PSA: <a href="https://livelaugh.blog/posts/non-ai-images-for-blogs-websites/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">You don't have to use generative AI "art" in your blog or other projects</a>. </li>
<li>When dealing with feedback on my work, I still reference Ann Friedman's <a href="https://www.annfriedman.com/the-disapproval-matrix?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper" target="_blank">Disapproval Matrix</a>. Lovers and critics, <a href="https://notetoself.studio/about/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=not-a-bolt-but-a-whisper#contact-me" target="_blank">bring it on</a>.</li>
</ol>

🎁 '25 wrapped
<p>Hello! I'm Gina Trapani and once a month I round up the 10 best posts from <a href="https://notetoself.studio/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">Note to Self</a> in this newsletter. This is the last edition of 2025, and I want to thank you for being a subscriber. Writing in public again has been the most fun and scary undertaking of my year. It means a lot to me that you're here for it.</p>
<p>A question on my mind: Would you prefer getting 5 links twice a month versus 10 once a month? Seriously, I want your opinion on this. Just reply to this email to let me know.</p>
<ol>
<li>'Tis the season for year-end listicles, and here's mine: <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/best-things-i-watched-listened-to-and-read-in-2025/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">the best things I watched, read, and listened to in 2025</a>. Turns out I found most of my favorite things via human versus algorithmic recommendations.</li>
<li>Good things come when you show your work, even if it's put together with popsicle sticks and duct tape. In that spirit, here are <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/stuff-i-built-just-for-me-in-2025/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">four unreleased software projects I made just for me this year</a>, including a <a href="https://notetoself.studio/projects/tri-today/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">triathlon training guide</a>, an <a href="https://notetoself.studio/projects/inbox-cleaner/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">email inbox game</a>, and a <a href="https://notetoself.studio/projects/cover-search/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">media cover art search engine</a>.</li>
<li>Building things IRL never looks like a sped-up short-form video. Recently I had to re-learn the first rule of <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/weekend-computer-build/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">building a computer</a>: It always involves a second trip to the store. (But it's so worth it.)</li>
<li>You can almost smell the machine oil in this delightful story about an apprenticeship and career pivot: Paul Lundy left his lucrative and unfulfilling corporate job behind to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/11/20/us/typewriter-repair-seattle-bremerton.html?rsrc=flt&unlocked_article_code=1.208.dNOm.2D3afHcNPh8R&smid=url-share&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">repair typewriters</a>.</li>
<li>Back at the office, Brian Moore's absurd and awesome <a href="https://busysimulator.com/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">Busy Simulator</a> helps you "feign importance with repeating app sounds." That Microsoft Teams sound spikes my cortisol the most. <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/notetoself.studio/post/3m6hextnauj2p?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">How about you?</a></li>
<li>A useful data visualization: <a href="https://jmail.world/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">Browse and search Jeffrey Epstein's email in Jmail</a>, a convincing Gmail clone.</li>
<li>"High achievers are perhaps the most insecure people among us. They need constant reminders, promotions, or media attention to feel good about who they are." – my friend <a href="https://rulestolive.substack.com/p/rule-17-live-for-stories-not-perfection?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">Scott Berkun doesn't mince words</a>.</li>
<li>"Be bored. Be by yourself. Let your mind wander. Let your imagination breathe and watch what comes." – <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/video/t-magazine/100000010556896/everybody-wants-to-be-gen-x.html?smid=url-share&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">Rosie Perez</a>’s advice in this <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/02/t-magazine/gen-x-generation.html?unlocked_article_code=1.7U8.4O8i.QiiTHOqo9HOd&smid=url-share&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">NYT Magazine feature on Gen X</a>, “the last generation that wasn’t online until adulthood.”</li>
<li>Netflix released <a href="https://theartofkpopdemonhunters.com/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">142 gorgeous pages of digital art and behind-the-scenes stories</a> about the making of KPop Demon Hunters. The fashion, food, character, and weaponry details here are fabulous.</li>
<li>Digital tech flattens our experience of the world, writes Amelia Wattenberger in this <a href="https://wattenberger.com/thoughts/our-interfaces-have-lost-their-senses?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">beautifully-illustrated essay</a> about how we might engage more of our senses when we interact with computers. I think about this idea in terms of <a href="https://notetoself.studio/link/our-interfaces-have-lost-their-senses/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=25-wrapped" target="_blank">how my kid observes adults getting things done</a>: it all just looks like we're tapping on a glass screen. </li>

<p>I wish you and your loved ones happy, peaceful, and restful holidays. See you next year!</p>

🦋 Smash that butterfly
<p>Hello! This is issue #1 of Note to Self by <a href="https://ginatrapani.org?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Gina Trapani</a>. I'm a recovering achiever writing about creativity over productivity. Once a month I round up the 10 best posts from my blog <a href="https://notetoself.studio?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Note to Self</a> in this newsletter.</p>
<ol>
<li>Blogging is fun, so I’ve started again. Winnie the Pooh said, “I always get to where I am going by walking away from where I have been.” <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/what-i-m-doing-here/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">What I’m doing here</a> now has a lot to do with where I have been.</li>
<li>What's the blog about? <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/creativity-over-productivity/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Creativity over productivity</a> is the most succinct way to describe how I'm reprioritizing my life's work as I kick off my second half.</li>
<li>Author Ann Patchett describes whatever idea she has for her next book as a beautiful, wild butterfly that flutters around her mind. To write it, she has to <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/smashing-the-butterfly/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">smash the butterfly</a> onto her desk to pin it down into a flat, broken, poorly-reassembled version of itself. Making Note to Self felt like this.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ybwHDRjnY4&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Sarah Snook</a> discusses bringing The Picture of Dorian Gray to Broadway: "One thing the director said on the first day of rehearsals was: you can only eat an elephant one spoonful at a time. I was like, okay yeah sure. I’ll do it that way. Now I’ve got to eat the Broadway part of the elephant." Snook won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in the one-woman show, in which she plays 26 characters. Here’s <a href="https://media.ginatrapani.org/theater/the-picture-of-dorian-gray-on-broadway/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">my review</a>.</li>
<li><a href="https://bsky.app/profile/erikahall.bsky.social?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Erika Hall</a> painted a truckload of <a href="https://chicken.pics/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">delightful chicken portraits</a> while she was supposed to be writing a book. The work one does while avoiding something else is some of the best work.</li>
<li>I started lifting weights about 6 months ago as a complete beginner. On a few occasions I’ve had to miss a week or two. Every time, I was sure I lost all my progress and was starting again from scratch. I was wrong. When it comes to strength training, you get <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/stronger-after-the-break/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">stronger after a break</a>.</li>
<li><a href="https://bsky.app/profile/astrokatie.com/post/3lrxfsxnkms2c?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Reminder</a>: "Chatbots–LLMs–are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re 'right' it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all."</li>
<li><a href="https://johayartist.com/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Jo Hay's series of portraits with the wonderful name Persisters</a> are stunning. Looking at any one of them feels like making eye contact with a wise old friend.</li>
<li><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/113496/9781984881502?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Martha Beck</a>: "Your true self is intensely interested in your real life’s work—but it could give a rat’s ass about anything else. When you pursue a career that pulls you away from your true self, your talent and enthusiasm will quit on you like a bored intern." I’ll forever think about my talent, enthusiasm, and energy like interns I can give interesting work they’ll enjoy and grow doing, or anything else that will make them quit on me.</li>
<li>"The trick to being truly creative is to be completely unselfconscious. To resist the urge to self-censor. To not-give-a-shit what anybody thinks. That’s why children are so good at it. And why people with Volkswagens, and mortgages, Personal Equity Plans and matching Louis Vuitton luggage are not." Every few years I revisit <a href="https://notetoself.studio/quote/completely-unselfconscious/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=smash-that-butterfly" target="_blank">Linds Reddings' viral essay</a> on creativity and his life in advertising and it takes my breath away.</li>

🐎 Wild horses
<p>Hello! I'm Gina Trapani and about once a month I round up the 10 best posts from <a href="https://notetoself.studio/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wild-horses" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Note to Self</a> in this newsletter. It snowed here in NYC this week. Time to warm up with some good links.</p>
<ol><li><p>I can't stop listening to the devastating collection of earworms that is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lu8zY9JVNApies5wxWp84Q_iSKibl6zaw&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=wild-horses" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Lily Allen's new album, West End Girl</a>. Allen wrote and recorded all 14 raw, catchy tunes about her marriage’s breakdown in just 10 days. 🏈 Halftime
<p>Hello! I'm Gina Trapani and about once a month I round up the 10 best posts from <a href="https://notetoself.studio/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">Note to Self</a> in this newsletter. Since the last issue, over 500 of you signed up to get this email, which is great because sending it to myself was getting pretty lonely.</p>
<ol>
<li>After a year of writing in private, I <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/show-your-work/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">announced the blog and newsletter</a> on social, and spent the week high on the love and encouragement I got back. Then <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/post-launch-freeze/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">I froze</a>.</li>
<li>There’s a big difference between intellectual and <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/experiential-knowledge/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">experiential knowledge</a>. Experiencing something firsthand gets your body involved, and that's how you absorb information into your bones.</li>
<li>Turned 50 years old in September, so I've officially got half a century of experience in these less-dense bones. Here are <a href="https://notetoself.studio/post/halftime/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">a few halftime birthday notes to myself</a>. </li>
<li>"Be kind and forgiving to yourself, and treat yourself like a friend." My almost birthday twin Anil Dash also turned 50 in September, and shared <a href="https://www.anildash.com/2025/09/05/five-for-fifty/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">5 community actions to mark the day</a>. </li>
<li>When inspiration strikes, capture it. KPop Demon Hunters star and singer-songwriter EJAE, the voice of Rumi, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOMmMB5D59S/?igsh=NWJscnRwYjJ3cWF0&utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">wrote mega-hit Golden on her way to the dentist</a>. </li>
<li>In 1995, during a tumultuous time in her personal life and high-visibility time in her professional life, Mariah Carey blew off steam by writing and recording a secret grunge album called <a href="https://notetoself.studio/link/someones-ugly-daughter/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">Someone's Ugly Daughter</a>. </li>
<li>Asked Mike Monteiro how he thinks about creativity, and he wrote about how life’s big and small, important and trivial, mundane and creative activities are all interconnected. <a href="https://buttondown.com/monteiro/archive/how-to-fold-socks/" target="_blank">Good answer</a>. </li>
<li>When your self-worth is linked to your productivity, you see every activity in your day as either valuable (productive) or not. Rick Foerster argues for <a href="https://newsletter.thewayofwork.com/p/unproductive?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">the value of “unproductive” time</a>. </li>
<li>"Completing tasks, no matter how inane, made me feel productive. Never you mind the fact that most of those tasks have no real importance and frequently represent phony work." – <a href="https://livingafi.com/2015/11/06/done-detoxing/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">Living a FI</a> describes their firsthand experience detoxing from life in constant too-effin-busy mode.</li>
<li>If you've got a book in you, Kevin Kelly's essay <a href="https://kk.org/thetechnium/everything-i-know-about-self-publishing/?utm_source=notetoself&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=halftime" target="_blank">Everything I know about self-publishing</a> is a must-read. My story: Being an author has a lot more cachet attached to it than being a blogger, but interacting with an audience online is way more fun than having a book with my name on it sitting on a shelf.</li>
