In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop

A slightly more managable haul for one blogpost - gonna try to get to a rhythm where I do these about 4 at a time but not more. That way the blog isn't all pokemon all the time [thom yorke starts menacingly singing YOU DO IT TO YOURSELFFFF in the background].

Let's jump in:

Fri 05/15/2026 - Vigoroth Drawing of pokemon 288; a large white monkey with red accents and large sloth claws

Middle evolutions! I remember seeing this one for the first time when I was drawing Slakoth for the daily dex; it's so weird that it's clearly a sloth but also a monkey (did you know it's the "energetic monkey" pokemon?) - there's this like, unhinged relationship pokemon has with primates as a whole where they're all seemingly interchangeable from a design standpoint and that's bonkers to me. Let a sloth be a sloth?

Sat 05/16/2026 - Chingling Drawing of pokemon 433; a yellow orb with a smiley face and what looks like candy cane hair

Man. I just hate this one's name lmao. No thank you!!

Sun 05/17/2026 - Kubfu Drawing of pokemon 891; a koala with ridiculously large 80's hair in an unidentified martial arts stance

Given what we know about Koalas brain function it's both the funniest thing to imagine them being mentally able to comprehend the discipline needed for martial arts but also of COURSE the (arguably) stupidest mammal alive would be a fighting type.

Mon 05/18/2026 - Jolteon Drawing of pokemon 135; a dog cat rabbit creature that's mostly yellow and has lightning like accents in its fur

An Icon!! Arguably one of my favorite Eveelutions in terms of design but ultimately useless because like, why would you do this to your Evee if you have a Pikachu? Unless like there's been a cultural movement for Jolteon. Have we come around on Jolteon as a pokemon? I know I bang the "electric rodent" drum every time but it feels like there's not much a Jolteon can give you that a Pika can't, and there are better, more diverse routes you can take your Evee (provided you have the correct items, conditions etc).

Call me out for Jolteon libel if I'm speaking nonsense, I just don't see it!

It's been a while

Keeping a fair amount of my blogging bandwidth (a personal metric, not a data one) taken up by drawing pokemon every day and then getting incredibly sick, I've noticed that some of my more prominent "post archetypes" if you will have fallen by the wayside.

Just at a casual glance, it's been a pretty long time since we've seen birds talking shit, camera focus adventures, one subject three lenses, Possum being places she shouldn't, and most importantly - Snowapple saying good morning to all.

Well, speaking of:

Photo of a very proud looking black cat sitting on front of a window

For the first time since like February I can feel my health being on the mend; getting back to regular blogging and photography (and y'know, all my other creative endeavors lmfao) seems attainable?? It may not feel that way by the long covid 5pm crash but right now in this moment, having recently photographed my cat and put it on the goddamn blog? I feel progress. "It's the little things" has never been more more pertinent, fuck.

And like, I wouldn't call these last few months "lost months" but they definitely set back almost every project I'm working on (other than pokemon) so it's nice to feel a bit of a shift. There's the whole cardboard box wall thing I've still not explained. We'll get there!!!

In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop

We got a doozy today. I'm still recovering from long covid and I've also been dealing with a huge work project that involved some weekend work and long nights and I'm happy to say that not only is that done (and I'm taking a 5 day weekend around memorial day) but also I found my 10 minutes per day to draw some fucking pocket monsters.

Here's the photo and blog haul as catch-up!

Weds 05/06/2026 - Bronzor Drawing of pokemon 436; a blueish coin-like creature with clown eyes

Something about this guy gives me clown energy. I don't know what it is, but there's a circus-like aesthetic to the face that I just don't like it. I've never had a 'fear of clowns' in the same way a lot of people who watched IT too young did, but I've always had an aesthetic aversion to the clown or stereotypical circus visual.

Thurs 05/07/2026 - Grotle Drawing of pokemon 388; a large tortoise with plants growing on its back

Hell yea, love a tortoise carrying the world on its back, even if "the world" is just some bushes.

Fri 05/08/2026 - Uxie Drawing of pokemon 480; a strange looking alien creature with dual tails and red gems

I didn't look it up but like, is Uxie an alien? Uxie feels like an alien.

Sat 05/09/2026 - Solrock Drawing of pokemon 338; a creature that looks like the sun but also rocks

Lot going on here. It's the sun, but it's also a star, but it's also a rock, but it also has a face.

Sun 05/10/2026 - Carbink Drawing of pokemon 703; a rock with a head that has dog ears

Carbink is so weird. It feels like it should be edible. Like, in the same realm as vanilite or the other ice cream pokemon but I can't put my finger on why? It's clearly a rock. Like, it'd hurt your teeth.

Mon 05/11/2026 - Remoraid Drawing of pokemon 223; a greenish fish with large eyes

A while back I saw this video and it broke my brain in terms of being able to hear the word 'FISH' and not think "You know what that means!"

Enjoy I guess lmfao

Tues 05/12/2026 - Cascoon Drawing of pokemon 268; a purple sea urchin with menacing red eyes

This is just like, a sea urchin, right?

Weds 05/13/2026 - Corphish Drawing of pokemon 341; a large lobster. It's a giant lobster.

Last night I was thinking about Godzilla VS Ebirah again (as I often am) so I intentionally picked the large crustacean for the daily dex. Easy choice.

Thurs 05/14/2026 - Skitty Drawing of pokemon 300; a pinkish cat with plant-like ear protrusions and a bulbous tail

One of the more fun parts about this project is how prevalent the "I don't go here" is - I'm regularly rolling random numbers and saying "what the fuck is this thing" because I've played to completion so few overall entries in the franchise, but in particular "here's a pokemon I've never heard of....AND IT'S A CAT"?? Beautiful. Tears of joy. Violins swell.

Look at this weird thing!!! I wanna see it catloaf.

That time Ultraman Producers Slapped a Lizard Frill on a Godzilla Suit and Hoped for the Best

Gomess and Jirahs as icons of resourcefulness and special effects artist comradery
Show full content

Dude, so I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about giant monsters.

I was introduced to the Showa-era dubbed Godzilla films ("GODZILLER!") very young by my older brother and my cousin and that canon event permanently adjusted my brain chemistry so that a radioactive lizard created as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear weapons is now a comfort to me in horrendous times.

As a "Godzilla sicko" (best insult I've ever gotten tbh) I go out of my way to watch any and everything in the genre; the good, the bad, the Pulgasari - and while finishing up the second season of Monarch (The effects are fucking gorgeous in that show; Godzilla and 'Titan X' look incredible) I started thinking a lot about special effects of modern day monster films and just how fucking much has changed since the genre's origins. No shade to the hard work 3D artists put in now and this isn't a "digital vs practical" pit fight1 - I just really miss a rubber suit.

And then I started thinking about Gomess and Jirahs and their place as icons of resourcefulness and special effects artist comradery

If you're asking "girl what" then buckle in because this shit brings me so much joy:

Gomess

When the very first installment of what would become the Ultraman franchise was in production (Tsuburaya's Ultra Q, aired January 1966), the first monster that shows up in very first episode is a creature called Gomess that is found in a cave system under a roadway construction site.

Let's take a look at it, shall we:

Screenshot from the opening scene of the first episode of Ultra Q; a large horned monster is heading toward the camera in a cave
Gomess walking through a construction site
Gomess roaring

If you're thinking "That's just a poorly disguised Godzilla suit lmao" you'd be mostly right!!

The base of the creature is the Godzilla suit that was used in Godzilla VS Mothra (1964). Early designs for Gomess went from a quadruped to biped and eventually Toho agreed to lend the Ultra Q team an older Godzilla suit, with Toho artists working to make the modifications in a way that could be useful to Tsuburaya but reversible for future Godzilla use (which may or may not have panned out, but more on that later).

They added the larger saber teeth, the horn, some hair (Gomess is described as a "mammal" lmao), some armor plating on the chest and a slight fork to the tail, and while it's cool, it definitely doesn't not look like Godzilla.

Here's the original Godzilla VS Mothra suit for context:

Godzilla stalking toward the camera
Godzilla about to destroy a power plant Scenes from 1964's Godzilla VS Mothra

If you were watching Ultra Q for the first time on TV in the 60's and hadn't seen any of the Godzilla movies (entirely possible, by '66 there had only been 5 of them released) you probably wouldn't think twice, but in modern view it's reeeeeall hard not to look at Gomess and think "hey what the fuck" lmao

Ultra Q DVD art that shows Gomess and other creatures in slightly colorized designs

But it wasn't a one-off! Iterations of Gomess went on to have recurring roles throughout the Ultra franchise as the series continued and expanded and rebooted over the last 60 years. The beast makes numerous re-appearances as either the monster themselves or other creatures taking their iconic form, but the most notable of which to me personally is from 2022's Shin Ultraman, directed by Shinji Higuchi.

At the very start of the film, Gomess surfaces from a construction site just like in that first episode of Ultra Q, and the effects team did an incredibly funny yet stupid (complimentary) thing with the design; in the spirit of the creature's origin, they took the (2016) Shin Godzilla 3D model (that film also having been co-directed by Higuchi) and converted it into a reimagining of Gomess. They added the forked tail, the horns, the teeth, the armor plates to the front. Behold, Shin Gomess:

Screen from Shin Ultraman where an updated version of Gomess (based on Shin Godzilla's design) walks through a mountain valley

(Shin Godzilla for context)

Screen from Shin Godzilla; the creature walks through Tokyo causing havoc

No notes. Perfect.

Wait so it's good that they ripped off designs?

It's way more complicated and cool than that.

If you're a person who has casually watched Godzilla films, you're here to see rubber suits wrestle and blow up model towns so "why does Godzilla often look different" probably doesn't really come to mind. Again, sickos like me can look at a lineup of all the Godzilla faces from the 1954 - 1975 films and tell you exactly which is which, but that's beside the point.

"What happened to the costumes after the fact" probably isn't something a lot of people think about.

These suits took a LOT of time, love and money to build, but they weren't exactly the most durable things and would often be single-use, with a new suit being created every few films. In many cases, they could get so worm down after initial use that they'd just get tossed in a warehouse for parts, or for re-use in scenes that might involve risk to damaging the newer 'primary' suit of a film - explosion effects, Godzilla in the water, the time they covered him in sludge in Godzilla VS Hedorah etc which depending on the film can cause a jarring difference in Godzilla's appearances from shot-to-shot.

But ultimately it makes sense that other studios making films and TV in a similar genre space would ask to "use the leftovers" rather than invest time, money and love into building new things while the Toho suits were functionally abandoned.

Total sidenote but as of 2026, a lot of the Showa-era Godzilla suits have effectively rotted away with a few exceptions. I could be wrong but I think the 1974/75 Mechagodzilla suit is one of the only ones left fully intact - so even if it does feel a bit "store brand Godzilla" to have these suits get repurposed as other, unrelated monsters in entirely different franchises, it makes me smile knowing that the work of these artists got second lives.

And I say "lives" - plural, because Gomess wasn't alone in sharing Godzilla DNA.

Jirahs

In September of 1966, the tenth episode of the Ultraman show that followed Ultra Q features a dinosaur-like monster controlled by a mad scientist named Jirahs and, well again let's take a look:

Seems a bit familiar, yea?

Jirahs used the same base Godzilla suit as Gomess; Toho gave it back to Tsuburaya for this, but the head had to be replaced (read this2) so the Ultraman team borrowed the head from Godzilla's Invasion of Astro Monster (1965) suit, gave the Godzilla VS Mothra suit body a coat of green paint, stitched them together and added a lizard frill but like....kinda otherwise called it a day?

Which isn't to say this wasn't a lot of work, but it seems like they weren't even trying to hide or obscure the iconic Godzilla dorsal plates. Hell, the monster even uses a sped-up Godzilla roar and shoots lightning from its mouth, it's wild how brazen this one was.

Again, for context here's a close-up shot of Godzilla from Astro Monster - note the head and eye shape similarities from the above Jirahs shot:

And like, not to spoil too much from an iconic episode of a 1966 Tokustatsu classic, but Ultraman violently removes the frill at one point during their fight, which is a pretty bold decision given how that's the main distinguishing factor of the creature, but like look at this:

 Gigabash (2025)

You can clearly see the delineation of where the head and body are from different suits (at least in this shot from the DVD release, probably not in the original airing)

Incredible. 10/10.

If anything, thinking about this makes me wish there were more translated behind-the-scenes interviews and footage from the 60's and 70's on what went into these "suitmation" designs. It's a fucking fascinating period in film special effects history and it's a mostly dead practice at this point.

Anyway, when in doubt; slap a frill on your monster (or someone else's monster with their express permission) and make it a completely different monster. Anyone who judges you doesn't understand the spirit of Ultraman.

Or, as Professor Nikaido would say:

Crazed scientist Professor Nikaido, holding up a gun and a subtitle reads 'Jirahs is more important than life itself.'

Anyway, thanks for reading. Here's a cat. (His name is Smokescreen)

  1. I will say though, if start sorting through everything about Stranger Things 5 that was a disappointment, the design of Henry's character (which I'm on the record as not liking to begin with, I could probably do a whole post about how they cheapened the show by making the villain just a guy instead of using the otherworldly monster they already had) looks so much worse in S5 compared to S4. He was always a mix of practical and digital effects, but they went harder on digital in S5 and it just looks bad. I digress.

  2. Depending on who you talk to, the head either was damaged in the original Godzilla VS Mothra filming OR the modifications for Gomess were so extreme it was hard to revert, and Toho had to create a backup head for the suit in any further use. Both accounts appear true but this goes to the next point about wishing there was more documentation behind this period in the industry.

In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop

I get that I'm still sick and very busy with work but some days go by where I'm like "shit I have 4 pokemon on my camera's card and I need to get them out of therrrrrre"

Anyway - these were all RNG over the last 5 days. Please enjoy!

Fri 05/01/2026 - Pecharunt Drawing of pokemon 1025; a strange ghostlike purple butterfly thing with heart motifs

Ok seriously what even is this thing. Like. It's almost bug adjacent but also it's like a ghost? Poison ghost feels weird for something with literal hearts in its design but go off I guess?

[Quick visit to bulbapedia later]

It's supposed to be fucking mochi?? Now I'm even more confused lmfao

Sat 05/02/2026 - Ursaring Drawing of pokemon 217; a large brown bear standing on hind legs and a yellow ring on its belly

The LAD. Look at this creature. Love it. I get that it's just a bear but like, why fuck with one of nature's greatest hits? Reminds me of the Mighty Bears (and Mighty Bears Seven of course) from EarthBound even though there's like no design overlap. Biped brown bears. That's it.

Sun 05/03/2026 - Pachirisu Drawing of pokemon 417; a mostly light blue squirrel with yellow cheeks

Dude I know I've been down on this shit before but it's actually kinda neat when the fake pikachu's show up. Electric rodent IS a good design choice even if it's incredibly repetitive at this point.

Mon 05/04/2026 - Rowlet Drawing of pokemon 722; a small brown owl with a leaf-like bowtie

I don't feel good about this one. The drawing, not the pokemon - I love Rowlet! I love owls! I just did not do a good job on what is effectively a couple of circles and some frills lmao

Tues 05/05/2026 - Exeggcute Drawing of pokemon 102; a group of six eggs with faces, one of which is cracked open and revealing yolk

Aaaaaaand rounding out the post, today's entry; some fucken EGGS. Arguably cooler when they turn into a palm tree but we can't always judge based on who someone will become. There's probably a good transition joke in here somewhere but I'm tired, man.

Small thoughts about a small holiday turned large

The fact that it started as "an important historical military victory in another country" and has become effectively the most prominent celebration of Mexican culture in the United States over the course of my lifetime is just WILD.

And this is kinda in stark contrast since I moved away from California to a majority white state in the northeast (that's on me!!) - no one seems to give a shit about it here but growing up in San José in particular and being chicano, there was this overwhelming sense of cultural explosion. You can understand why white people would think (incorrectly) "Oh it's like Mexican independence day!" based on how fucking massive the celebrations were.

And I'm purely grasping at straws here but it's expansion in the culture feels directly lined up in the wake of things like Bush-era immigration crackdowns, immigrant driver's license bans and generalized 90's / early 2000's store-brand anti-Mexican racism. Hell, it didn't become "nationally observed" as a holiday until a congressional resolution in 2005.

But this year in particular - in light of all the horrors visited upon nonwhite people in this country and the specific flavor of "Mexicans are all rapists and drug dealers" nonsense that our so called leadership loves to spout, I deeply wish I lived somewhere closer to where a celebration was happening because I know that shit's gonna pop off. Maybe next year!

Anyway, here's a cat, his name is Sloth

Birdchosting to the max, my friends

This morning while I was taking out my AM litter haul (living with this many cats you do multiple empties per day) I heard more birdsong than usual, and it sounded a little distressed. Upon closer inspection:

Photo of a small baby cardinal ruffled into a patch of clovers on the ground

They were flomping around on the ground violently and I was really worried; I thought it'd like fallen out of its nest or was injured or something but as I got closer, it sprung up into a tree, which is when I realized - dude was learning how to fly and man.

MAN.

LOOK AT HOW FRUMPY THIS CHILD LOOKS

The baby cardinal is now up in a tree branch and looks incredibly unsure of itself

Both parents were flanking at a relatively safe distance and weren't bothered by the appearance of me until I showed an interest in the little one. They were ready to fucking cut me if I did more than take photos.

The father cardinal; bright red and violent staring at me in disdain

But like seriously. Why does this baby cardinal look like a 90 year old accountant who two marriages ago gave up on personal intimacy??

Side view of the baby cardinal; its downy feathers are falling out and it looks a right mess

You can still see some of the dew from the ground on its face down.

The baby cardinal is looking at the camera with utter confusion at being alive on its face

Good shit.

Anyway happy Bandcamp Friday. Go buy some of our music OR go to my most recent recommendations post (you gotta scroll down to the lower section), all the stuff in there is still good to listen to and worth your money.

Tues 04/28/2026 - Ninjask Drawing of pokemon 291; a mechanical looking butterfly that's maybe wearing a super sentai mask

Man, I love a bug in a sentai mask. I get that a lot of sentai masks are like, bug adjacent anyway but it's just cool. Never had one of these in a game but I'll def be on the lookout in titles where they're present.

Weds 04/29/2026 - Dewott Drawing of pokemon 502; a bipedal mostly-blue otter doing a martial arts pose; it has clams attached to where its pants would have pockets, were it wearing pants

Another starter's middle evolution that's ok! I actually like this more than the final form (going biped to quadruped is not my jam), and the clam details are cool.

Thurs 04/30/2026 - Blitzle Drawing of pokemon 522; a black and white horse with lightning shaped hair; it's not quite a zebra becauseit isn't truly striped

MAN. LMAO. I FUCKED THIS GUY UP SO MUCH. THE EYE IS HAUNTING ME.

Like, I actually dig the (intended) design; a non-zebra with lightning hair but OOF I messed this up so bad hahaha

Ok we're back to it (the posting) - I haven't decided what I'm going to draw for today's (Tuesday) but since I have a kind of chaotic day due to work I figured I should get the last weeks worth of dexes up.

Please enjoy some faithful representations and some downright abominations.

Thurs 04/23/2026 - Scorbunny Drawing of pokemon 813; a biped rabbit that's mostly white with some red accents

Speaking of.

Man.

I fucking butchered this poor thing lmfao. Perspective?? What’s that’s never heard of them.

Scorbunny's a cool design honestly, and I think in a just world I would have started over but ten minutes a day doesn't really allow for that and sometimes you gotta just do the damn thing.

Fri 04/24/2026 - Hisuian Lilligant Drawing of pokemon 549; a biped plant creature who looks like they're about to do ballet

As always, if there’s a Hisuian variant of a pokemon, it’s probably cooler and we’re going with that for the project. Lilligant is no exception - gains the fighting type, loses some of the frill. Hell yea.

Sat 04/25/2026 - Sceptile Drawing of pokemon 254; a perpetually stoned looking green biped lizard who looks like they have secrets

Sceptile has this perpetually stoned thing going on. I was initially tempted to call this post the "nightmare blunt rotation" purely based on this dude's face.

Sun 04/26/2026 - Tirtouga Drawing of pokemon 564; an also-stoned looking blue sea turtle

This is just a turtle (who also looks perpetually stoned).

Mon 04/27/2026 - Stunky Drawing of pokemon 434; a purple and cream colored cat that's meant to be a skunk I think

This is just a cat that's supposed to look like a skunk!!! But instead of stoned, they look more surprised. Something about the mouth design (even in the official, not just my quick drawing) has 'early Garfield' vibes to it but like, with surprise instead of resigned mondays.

Anyway, if anyone wants to pick what Tuesday's entry is gonna be lemme know by like 6pm ET at the latest otherwise I'll hit the RNG.

Alright alright catching up.

Sun 04/19/2026 - Jumpluff Drawing of pokemon 189; a blue orb with pom-pom style growths

The first time I ever heard anything about this pokemon was in the Great Gundam Project episode (189, a benefit of them doing this numerical bit is that it's easy to find) where Jackson tries to guess it's name purely on context clues and both they and Austin Walker (guest hosting) absolutely whiff at names to the point that Emeline like, falls out of her chair breaking down in laughter.

I've still never seen one in a game lmao

Mon 04/20/2026 - Bounsweet Drawing of pokemon 761; a small raddish looking thing with a face

Ok, I know no one will believe me but - this was PURELY coincidental. I hit RNG and rolled Bounsweet and midway through I thought "Oh shit I should have done something weed specific for 4/20" and then I realized I kinda had? Grass type, sweet, blaze it etc etc. I get that it's more of a mangosteen but I'm owning it.

Tues 04/21/2026 - Goldeen Drawing of pokemon 118; a goldfish with a unicorn horn

Man I know Goldeen exists but for some reason I completely memory holed that it was Gen 1. Having it and Magikarp in the same lineup feels weird?? They serve different purposes obviously but still.

Weds 04/22/2026 - Makuhita Drawing of pokemon 296; a rotund yellow biped creature with black boxing gloves

No idea on this one, dude. RNG. Haven't had a fighting type on the project for a while though; I temporarily forgot which color I was using for the numbers. It looks kinda uninspired?? No offense to Makuhita fans out there but I'm not feeling it.

Here's some thoughts about how Gundam 00 adapted as a live performance is better than it has any right to be

For some backstory, a few months ago I'd been doing a re-watch of 2007's Mobile Suit Gundam 00 with my kids; for one of them it's a favorite entry in the franchise but for the other it's a Gundam series they hadn't seen yet, and when we got about midway through season 2 I remembered that this is a thing that happened:

 Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - Re:Build

If you're rightly wondering how in the FUCK can you do a Gundam show as a stage play, the answer is worth finding out for yourself...like seriously, check out the trailer. It's WILD... but here's a bit of a rundown for you.

After we'd finished both season 2 and the film (2010's A Wakening of the Trailblazer) we picked up the DVD of the 2019 performance of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Re:Build and watched it over the span of two nights (there's a convenient intermission! Stage play! Theatre!) and I was absolutely blown away by a few things:

First, that this even exists

I have a severe fondness for 00, but I don't feel that it's a particularly beloved entry in the Gundam fandom as a whole. Don't get me wrong, it's popular but it's often kind of an afterthought when people are suggesting AU series to newcomers1; possibly because it's so "political" (read: it opens with an ethnic conflict in the middle east, has a middle-eastern main character, and you can just tell by watching that this show was in production while Saddam Hussein was on trial and the US was 'rebuilding' Iraq) but I think that's a media literacy issue because all of Gundam is heavily political; 00 is just really up front with the real-world analogies in a way that the other shows tend to make more science fiction. It also doesn't hurt that it takes place in the AD calendar instead of a made-up future calendar, and the United States as military entity exists in the show's world.

Season 1 is strong if not a bit silly, but season 2 falls off pretty hard in terms of “let’s just do the thing again and this time it will work”2 trite anime nonsense. What I usually see about 00 online is memes about Tieria in a dress, Setsuna saying “I’ll become a Gundam” and commentary about how every woman in the show is gonna have back problems; I don’t often see people discussing how the actions of the protagonists in their stated goal of "eliminating war" end up enforcing oppressive government hegemony even before the paradigm shift of season 2. Anyway, don't wanna get too lost in the weeds (or spoil stuff for newcomers).

Ribbons' role is heavily expanded in the play and it's better for it; this guy SELLS it

Gundam 00 is often described as "a more serious version of Gundam Wing" which I find kind of laughable but there definitely are Wing comparisons to be made; Both shows focus on the activities of terrorists who have wildly overpowered military hardware compared to the status quo and their existence has profound impact on the global theatre of war. (00 cuts the number of protagonists because they realized 4 is easier to keep track of, and that Wu Fei was a mistake™)

But if I were to be told "A stage play is in production for Mobile Suit Gundam" I don't think 00 would be the entry that comes to mind, which is what makes this so fascinating.

Second, that it's good

Adaptations are always a bit weird, right? And stage in particular has more limitations than many performance mediums. From outfit changes, to set decoration / rearrangement and severely limited number of cast and crew members, it can be a LOT to pull off a stage production of even some of the most "basic" stories.

What they did with 00 is frankly a work of fucking art.

THE BOYS (and the world's greatest tactics school graduate [because that's a real thing] / alcoholic)

They've toned down the overall number of cast from the show to about 20 total and focus the primary narrative into what the appearance of the organization Celestial Being means to a world in 3 governmental blocs bickering over solar power. This means there are some notable absences in characters (most importantly, Saji and Louise3) but the primary focus on the four gundam boys and the more iconic characters of the various other factions really just works.

Third, that the mobile suit combat is excellent

Dating all the back to 1979's Mobile Suit Gundam, this franchise usually focuses on showing the cool robot doing the cool thing, sure, but that's always interspersed with cockpit shots to show the pilot's experiences; flipping switches, espousing ideology, screaming incoherently, getting hurt, the telltale 'helmet visor cracked, they're about to die' etc etc. The human at the center of the robot is the key emotional driver in these shows. In fact, it's really interesting how dehumanizing it is when they DON'T show this, especially for enemy pilots - see the first chunk of Gundam AGE for example.

 MASHALLAH SETSUNA!

The play takes the gamble that the "cool robot" doesn't need to be seen if the pilots are emoting properly - but they go a step further having them sitting in sick-ass chairs that are being spun around and pushed by stagehands dressed in black to try and remain invisible, and the pilot actors themselves swing swords and aim weapons, recreating the mech combat as close as they can. (The audio crew also deserves a shoutout here because the use of sound effects from the show is key). Comparing it to like, wheelchair jousting wouldn't be too far off tbh.

I forgot to snap a screenshot of Lockon firing with Haro popping up over his shoulder. Solid gold.

It sounds ridiculous, but it fucking works

Fourth, that the costume and actor selection is incredible

They nailed the casting and costume design. There is never a time a character is on stage that you don't know exactly who they are and feel the connection to their story arc.

Actors portraying Alleluia Haptism and Sumeragi Lee Noriega having a discussion over drinks
Actors portraying Patrick Colasour and Kati Mannequin talking in military uniform
Actors portraying Graham Acker and Billy Katagiri having a discussion
Three actors portraying Team Trinity in their ridiculous white and orange jumpsuits; the actor playing Nena is holding a purple haro robot with glowing red eyes

There's something truly magical about a character who isn't super emotive being 'acted well' and Tieria fucking nails it. Renowned dipshit Patrick Colasour steals every scene he's in (just like the show) and you really feel how disgusted Sergei is about Soma's situation. Ribbons (as mentioned) has a severely expanded role in the play vs his role in season 1 but his actor is so perfect that I'd be stoked if he replaced the creep Furuya as both Ribbons and Amuro in any further Sunrise productions where either character is voiced.

Seriously, stop giving that man work.

Anyway, I know I have a bias as a sicko who enjoys 00 but these actors are selling it so fucking hard. I'm constantly grinning that it exists and was successful enough to warrant a second play that follows events of season 2.

Wait what else

Two things - the DVD does not have subtitles so you're expected to speak Japanese, and you're also kind of expected to have seen the show to understand what's going on, buuuut they do a great job of explaining the world state and establishing the characters motivations to where if you've seen the show, you know the plot beats and you know what's happening as the characters emote, regardless of if you understand the language at all.

Plus it's so technically impressive that I'd be really interested to sit down with either a Japanese speaker who has never watched Gundam OR create my own goddamn fansub of this and watch it with like, my playwright brother (who's never watched Gundam to my knowledge) and see what they think because the acting is so goddamn good that I think it kind of transcends (oh here he fucking goes) its source material.

 GET HIS ASS

I haven't seen the second play yet but I have the DVD as of this week, just haven't been well enough because of Covid. Excited to give it a shot once health improves and I can make a night (or two) of it with the kids.

Ultimately if you're a Japanese speaker, a fan of Gundam 00, or just someone who wants to see interesting stage shenanigans, this is for you.

Again, I can't believe this exists.

  1. "AU" in Gundam terms references to "Alternate Universe"; the original 1979 series and its sequels all take place in a timeline called the Universal Century (UC) which can have a lot of baggage to get into, so new series in the franchise are often in their own AU timelines that are unconnected to UC. These include shows like Iron Blooded Orphans, Witch from Mercury, Gundam X, Gundam Wing, and of course, 00.

  2. I don't think my criticisms of season 2 are why other people don't like the show as much; I think people just want more Gundam Seed for reasons I will never understand.

  3. Don't worry; in the second play they did a few years later that's based off of Season 2 they brought them in as part of the cast.

Surprise vinyl is kinda the best type of vinyl (Go listen to Dogcatcher)

Photo of a vinyl record with the words 'each time i pass this way feels safer Why that's the very game boy I used!!

I got a pretty rad surprise package in the mail this morning. I'd been asked for my address for this thing so it wasn't a COMPLETE left field but what I thought I was getting was like a download card or a CD - I wasn't expecting a fucking vinyl.

Photo of the record itself coming out of the case; side A contains 'keep your chin up', 'so do ya', 'hey, hey, we'll make it', 'S.R.M. featuring Gift of Gab', and 'portrait of my father'

Dogcatcher is probably one of my favorite bands of the last 15 years. Since we were both up and coming artists in the bay area our paths crossed A LOT from either playing shows together, going to each other's shows, to the point where if either of us had something going on with lineups to fill we'd be the first to call each other, or if we had an opportunity we couldn't do ourselves, we'd refer each other to the bookers. Eventually Dogcatcher became probably the closest thing Curious Quail has to a 'sibling' band, if that makes sense? (Please ignore the time we tied them up in our practice space and had them record a hostage video encouraging people to support our bid for a 2013 radio contest)

close-up of the post-it note attached to the cover - it reads 'Mike, Thank you for contributing the sweet sounds of GameBoy, the first thing you hear on the record!' - Jared + tha boyz

A few years ago, Our drummer Joey filled in for some drum slots while Ramon was unavailable; once Ramon was back, Joey stayed on full-time as percussionist, doing double-band duty. With our violinist Alan having also recorded parts for Dogcatcher before, I was pretty stoked that Jared asked if I could add something for their latest album. It was a real simple ask, just some gameboy drum machine bloops; it did not take me long but I got a huge fucking grin not only at the credits for the track but also, again, getting a whole-ass vinyl in the mail about it. I was gonna buy the damn album when it comes out next week anyway lmao

Back cover of the record with track listing and personnel; KEEP YOUR CHIN UP features Ramon Esquivel: Drums
Joey Guthrie: Percussion
Andrew Heine: Vocals, Electric Guitars, Organ, Piano
Geoff McCann: Electric Guitars
Jared Milos: Bass
Curious Quail's Game Boy: Drum Loop

Anyway you should go check out Dogcatcher. They're incredibly talented, write fucking groovy bangers and if you have the chance to see them live you will dance so hard and your life will be better for it.

Can't wait to throw this on the turntable and see how it sounds.
